Toughest RestorationAfter looking at James restoration of his rough Se1a I thought I would start a new thread titled toughest restoration.
Post a before and after picture of the roughest engine you have restored.
For me that is My Se3.
Was a complete strip down, end off boiler, bushes resoldered, base and firebox repainted.

After

Thanks Chris.

My loco was probably the most challenging the first time around! Second time around it was a lot easier
Super job guys on the SE's

Some of you may have seen the pics before, but for the newer members, this is the engine i'm proudest of:-)
Thought i'd try a slide show on the forum, not sure how well it'll work though
(removed the slideshow as it took too long loading)

Great thread Tony, and some nice restos here.
Erik, good to see you back
I haven't really had 1 tough resto. I mean general resprays, soldering and such has all added up overtime with tough parts here and there
But luck when sourcing parts let me use these 2 engines
To make this
.
And probably my neatest soldering Job was this one

Soldering cylinders back together is a pain in the backside. I did it on Rosa's old cylinders and it worked well, but I eventually noticed small splits in them
Real good job on that MM2 Wallace the second one is almost as bad as they can possibly get

Sorry, I won't stray off topic here, but just this post.
Strange how a cylinder gets a split in it. My Dad's 1929 Meccano engine did. But my brother soldered it up, and worked a treat.
(Edited this post so as not to add another post)
Soldering was the only way, other than trying to source spares. Buying one would be better of course, but it somehow worked, and blends in
The second MM2 got stripped, made spares for others, then sold on as boiler firebox and base

They wouldn't ever solder on the loco piston, plus it looked appauling so I bought new cylinders it can happen... I suppose

I still look at your before and after pics in awe at what can be achieved.

great thread showing the extremes encountered when aquiring 'projects' from tony & jame's full repaint to spoke's clean up of the M140. All have their merits & show the depth of knowlegde & skill within the forum.
Sandy, when's the 101 going to be finished? You can't have enough 101 pics & vids flying around

The toughest steam engine rebuilding project I've taken on, thus far, is nearing completion. I've still got a little to do in order to put it to running, but with everyone is showing theirs, I'll show mine too....

Sandy...
I still have to machine the caps for the valve tubes and fit them with exhaust lines. All other parts are either already on the engine or will be after the next round of disassembly. It'll be mounted on hardwood when I finally get all the little loose ends tied up.

"best first effort". I should say so!! If only I knew how to do that.........

Granny..
I think I'm gonna like having you around...LOL I suppose the little engine will eventually have to have a new name. However, for me she'll always be the same little knobby kneed ugly gal she was when we met, but with fresh lipstick on...
The machining thing is still pretty new to me. I'm sure I'm taking 3 times as long to do half as much as someone who knows how it's really done. I gotta admit that doesn't bother me much. I can just picture a trained machinist shaking his head in wonder as he watches me do things the hardest way possible, every time.
Thanks for the kind words guys. I don't get to share new collection additions as often as some, but I do enjoy sharing them when I can.

Wow Steve, for an 'amateur' machinist thats a pretty professional finish.
I only hope I can attain that level of quality when I finally get my lathe.

You dont think your machine work is good? I guess that moves mine down into the disgraceful zone LOL!

Thanks James and everyone for the compliments.
Casey...
Its not that dislike my work. It's just that I know where I want to be with the finished project and my skill levels are still well within the novice range. This is the first real attempt to go at it with a steam engine project. Most of the things I've done so far have been modifications to the machine tools to increase their accuarcy and capabilities. I've also made a few specialized tools for the lathe and milling machine in preparation for taking on this project. That's the sum and total of my experience to date. Trust me... you can hide a lot of sins behind shiney...LOL
I've been around machine shops nearly all my working life but never got the chance to run any of the equipment. I was always there to make sure my drawings and ideas worked or the parts being made were up to spec. In short... I got to watch alot but I never got to play...LOL
You'd be surpised how cheaply you can get into a basic set up these days... as long as you are willing to own a bit of surprisingly usable chinese made iron.
