TrapperKeeperHello everyone, I have just joined these nice looking forums. I am 18 yrs old in July and just became obsessed with steam engines about a week or 2 ago. I am in highschool and run cross country and track for my school.
I bought a wilesco d405 from a website and sort of accidentally won a mamod SR1 off ebay Neither of them have arrived yet but I am sure I will like them. The SR1 doesnt have a scuttle though, I hope that isn't important. I watched many of your videos and others on youtube, these things look like alot of fun, cant wait for mine to get here. Thanks for letting me in the forums =)

Welcome TrapperKeeper.
I'm old enough to know WHAT a TrapperKeeper actually is. For the younger set, when my kids were going to school back 15 years ago or so...it was all the rage to have these multi pocket, highly decorated binders to hold all your school work in. That is the name they were sold by. Brings back good memories for me.
Anyhow, enough of a trip down memory lane...glad you are with us and glad you have a couple of nice incoming pieces. Any question is fair game on here, we all started with ONE!! Heck, you are starting with TWO, so you are a newbie on steroids so to speak.
Hope you enjoy these forums, we aim to help any way we can to get you completely hooked on steam as a lifelong wallet lightener!
cheers,
Roger

Hey thanks for the welcomes Alright my first question then, what is the scuttle for, and is it important to running an engine?

The scuttle latches on the back of the firebox and keeps the burner firmly inserted within the firebox. You "could" run it without a scuttle, but the burner might vibrate out. The scuttle has a slot cut in the back so the burner handle passes thru and to the outside, holding things nice and snug.
Further, it's a visual thing...original traction engines had this thing on the back called a scuttle for holding coal...this bit then tries to keep with the lines of the early TE's.
Replacements are readily available on eBay or from vendors like:
www.ministeam.com based in the US
www.forest-classics.com based in the UK
or
www.chasteam.com based in the UK
They don't cost an arm and a leg either...
cheers,
Roger

I don't use a scuttle and the bloomi' burner goes all over the firebox, the flames come out of the air holes ! And if you don't put it back in the correct position then it won't raise steam aswell!

Hi TK...thought I would show you a picture of what you need to find to fit your traction engine. This one is from the UK and you can find them closer at: www.ministeam.com here in the US...but a picture helps.
This is simply called the scuttle, or coal scuttle:

As for your wilesco D-405 you can expect to have a slow power horse and for the mamod a less powerful speed demon
