trash from ebayHi folks,
recently I bought trash from ebay, just to have something to do . The two little machines were badly mistreated and stored. With the aid of water, abrasive cleaners and polishing wadding both machines turned into well working runners, telling a story of heavy use. I had to re-solder the Wilesco boiler, but it works fine.
Just describing the features of this "very old" (Wilesco started to produce steam engines in 1950) D8.
1) reading: "German patent pending" on the burner (patent was granted in the late 50ies)
2) firebox rivets with smaller rim than today
3) boilers soldered onto the firebox
4) base in grey
5) flywheel with 6 spokes
6) de-mountable safety valve
7) crank secured with a hex nut
piston rod has round cross section and ends with a ring
9) condensate tray mad of aluminun
10) handle of the pipe made of bakelite
Just to show what can be made of trash.
BTW: Can somebody name and date the MAMOD, because I'm not so used to the differences, thanks.

they both seem to be a lot better than they started out

That Wilesco has gone through an amazing transformation.
I'm a firm believer as long as the boiler hasn't got any holes pretty much any engine can be fixed.
Nice job.

Those look like you put some effort into them, it sure is fun to bring one back from the grave isnt it?

Firebox and base painting would return both of those to a much better state IMO...neither is super rare so why not make the paint gleam like the boilers?

Maybe I'll paint it when I've nothing else to do . But in the moment I love 'em as they are cause they are played with...

They've come up nice mate, well done.
The model and date of the mamod is a SE1 from around late 50's, early 60's.

Amazing! I am happy too to learn more about the early Wilesco.

Thanks a lot for your opinions. In the meantime I discussed the paint issue with a colleague, a painter.
He will care for blastering and re-painting. He promised me to get it into full "shape" again.
What do you think: Is a paint resistant up to 600 °C for the firebox resistant enough?

Be careful, some heat-resistant paint doesn't work on metal exposed to flames. Try it on something else first.
