Ubuntu

hi guys I'm sending this message from the Linux operating system Ubuntu, on a live session

anyone here tried it?

its a free download that will run your pc on an operating system other than windows, so far it looks pretty good, it uses Firefox web browser.

Like most operating systems that isn't XP software is very difficult to source!
SPOKESMAN

Sounds like African - the name!

Ill get Zahra to make up some Swahili . . . .
Dauntless

I dunno yet you can download it from Linux 690MB as a cd image file then burn to a dvd and boot your pc from the dvd drive and it wont interfere with your windows installation, I downloaded ubuntu v6.10 for an AMD 64 processor there are loads of versions to suit anyone pc!

I've gone back to windows now I'm gonna look into it more as reguards to antivirus etc...

its an open source program, it has free web browser, word processor, spreadsheet, image editing, cd-dvd burning, e-mail, lots of games.....and more I cant remember all free!

I think I shall be persuing this out of curiosity. maybe rescue an old hdd from the attic to do an installation experiment!

Yes?

Spokesman here is the meaning off the bottom of the Ubuntu page

Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'Humanity to others', or 'I am what I am because of who we all are'. The Ubuntu distribution brings the spirit of Ubuntu to the software world.

It is African, ndio! (Yes)
MooseMan

I've used Ubuntu - pretty good, although I now use PureDyne.....I like using an environment called PD for DSP programming, and it is native to the PureDyne opensource distribution.

See https://devel.goto10.org/puredyne

Ubuntu's great though - very user friendly and a relative doddle to install.
steamgranny

Errr........I remember trying to use that except I installed it from outset on new machine only to discover I possessed most difficult make of modem to get online, with no ready-to-use pilots & would have to write my own And as I needed to get online to solve the problem.....well, you catch my drift
Then, when I wanted to uninstall, it required 'roots' removing in its 'boots' or some such thing (boot directory, I do believe ) Finally got my HDD back after a good dose of weedkiller & quickly reverted to Windows OS.
Actually, I rather liked the look of Ubuntu & always intended to install on old machine but just never got around to it I also expect someone has written that required script by now for modem Thanks for jogging my memory & may well have another try
Dauntless

cheers Mooseman

I'm downloading puredyne v2.3.52 now, what I like about these OS are they are cd bootable! hence no risk to my pc!

steamgranny I'm lucky I'm networked at home so as long as my ethernet works I'm straight online! I know what you mean though about drivers had lots of probs in the past
MooseMan

Let us know how you get on Dauntless!
Dauntless

ok mate no probs

If you don't reply, it's gone wrong
Chris

I've heard of it, but not used it.

I have run Suse Linux from CD, but it is very slow compared to running it from your hard disk, so now I have just installed it and duel boot.

Very easy to set up, download a CD image for installing over the net. Make a note of an IP address. Stick CD in machine, turn computer on, CD runs, install Suse (takes an hour or two to download everything), it partitions your hard drive either automatically or how you ask it to and installs a bootloader.

Getting rid of it again is somewhat trickier though!

I actually used a second hard drive. So one contains a boot loader and XP, the other contains Suse (and a chunk as fat 32 for backup). That way if I completely mess up the worst that can happen is I have a bootloader to try and uninstall.

Yes, that's the ticket! And, of course, that should have been 'driver' not 'pilot', that's the French equivalent. Got me wires crossed

If you install VMWare Server (it's now free), you can install Linux into a virtual machine that runs as a window on your Windows Desktop, it's an excellent way to try things out without any risk of trashing your existing PC. I run Debian Linux that way and I also have a virtual copy of XP to try things out with. You do need a decent amount of RAM to get performance though, I've got 1Gb and it works fine.
