Union Nut and Olive Steam Fitting

In another post, Mamod Fan mentioned a union nut fitting and olive. I thought
I'd show some close-ups of the 1/8" one I used on a recent engine I made
(see Scratchbuilt, Homebuilts thread).

Though it's larger compared to those made for commercial engines, the effect is
not too bad with the 2" diameter boiler I used it for. When I bought them at
the hardware store they were less than $3.00 each and you can make two
fittings from each one.

Pretty economical, a better appearance than the usual pipe soldered
straight to the boiler, and much easier to disconnect when necessary.

That's lovely.

Just what I needed but I've fitted a small rubber o-ring for the moment

much easier than putting a flare on the end of the copper tube

I dont find 1/8" pipe all that easy to find, I think that the next time I find myself at a regular plumbing supply house I might have to investigate that.
Compression fittings do an excellent job of sealing too.

dont forget to checkout auto shops for fittings as such things like brake lines use similar fittings.
