Unit/USE Engine

MooseMan, Roly and Triplett mentioned a USE engine in connection with marine
engines in an ebay thread. They didn't like it. What about them? Any pics?

If they're that bad, I'd like to see what it looks like so I'll know what to avoid!

These little things: http://www.forest-classics.co.uk/Unit%20Steam.htm

No idea if they are any good but have an un-machined kit lying about somewhere, purchased in a moment of lunacy!

I have built one from a unmachined kit and have another ro build. I love them and would like to build more

They slot together so you can build twins triples... i have even seen V16
MooseMan

I expect they're fine if you machine them yourself, but that's not a skill I have....I bought a machined kit, which was terrible...ports misaligned, you name it. Even when this was rectified I could never get the thing to run
satisfactorily....I've heard this from other sides as well, and I find the number of "good as new" engines that show up on eBay telling as well.

Ah, I see now, Unit Steam Engines, U.S.E. Apparently they only offer engine
kits, both machined and unmachined. So, you'd have to get a boiler elsewhere.

It's a shame so many bad experiences, at least Steamyjim likes 'em.

He must have a good one... I looked at the marine engine.. looked ok, but you don't know how they run just by looking at them
steamyjim

Or it could be my excellent engineering skills . HAHA no it was actually the first thing i ever made so it has a special place in my collection.

Boilers are available for it. There are steam plants aswell
MooseMan

The boilers are actually quite clever - they are hinged, so you tilt the boiler barrel back to get at the fuel tray....ideal for a boat. Putting the burner into place in a boat can be a real pain in the backside.
