USVI - Early SA1 Steam RoadsterI'm guessing 1977. 6 spoke wheels, water plug but solid fuel burner.
Although I've oiled and run it many times, this engine does not run as it should. The damn bus is faster! The problem seems to be the final driveband which slips and fails to deliver power to the wheel. If you take it off the engine races along, smooth as silk, but the car doesn't go anywhere of course.

Very nice!
When i first got my SA1 I remember being suprised at the size of the thing!
Refreshing to see it on a nice sunny background too! Its very dark and gloomy here at the moment

I love the looks of those, does it seem that something is binding in it? it might require a washer somewhere to act as a spacer.

It could be that the band is slightly too big and a replacement is needed.

Your date could be spot on. However, I think (but don't have my book with me) when the car was introduced in 1976, the ones for the export market had the solid fuel trays and ones for the domestic UK market had meths trays. What's a year between friends 76 / 77.
But anyway a lovely car and one of the main models in Momod's current range.

SA1Hi Manxman,
I researched it on MM's website and did wonder if there had been an export model. I inferred from his article that they changed the wheel style at the same time as the burners, which left this as something of an anomaly.
Loved the pics of your awesome collection. A mobile collector's dream. Two London Bus Engines! I love it. I guess I can hunt through the forum to find the individual pieces, but if you had a moment to post a few threads I'd greatly appreciate it. Early SR's and TE's particularly.
Andrew has his eye on the either the Showman's engine or the FE1 for our next acquisition. How do you rate them?

Ok, I'll find a few threads on the mobiles. Griffin did a great thread on the history of the SR and it will be very early in the Steam Ref Board.
AS for the Showmans and the Fire Engine. Both great models but my view is that the Showmans is little more than a TE with a small dynamo and a set of lights. For the extra cost, not really worth it. THe Fire Engine is great. But, if you want something different, have a look out for the Wilesco mobiles. They are also lots of fun and just a little bit different from the Mamods.

Do you have any stationary engines?

No. I have had in the past. About 2 years ago MM and I did a swap for the last stationary engine I owned. I'm sure I'll end up with another one at some point, but for now, I'm happy without one.
