Van De GrafI spoke to someone that is also interested in Steam today, I do not have contact information but hope to talk again soon. The reason I mention this is twofold. First he has a Jensen 20! Second, he has made a Van De Graf Generator the operates off of it, you know, those things that make your hair stand on end. I gave him my email address so I hope he sends me pictures and a build plan of sorts. This sounds like a Project!

That does sound interesting.

Sounds good, I wonder what would happen to the engine on Moose's head if he tried the generator out,

I've been thinking about building a van-de-graf generator for a while. (I'm on the look out for a suitable metal sphere.)
There are lots of plans here: http://amasci.com/emotor/vdg.html
But there is a problem with powering it by steam in that these generators work best with very dry air.
Having an engine releasing steam near by isn't going to help when you're trying to build up the static charge. I think moist air helps the charge leak away into the atmosphere.
But don't let me put you off, having made one you can always run it off a drill and then a engine and compare the results.

I think it might just be a December project, he told me that he used two stainless steel measuring cups fastened together so that tells me that it is not a large VDG. To power a Generator of any size it would take more engine than I own, so the miniature version that throws sparks a quarter of an inch or so would have to satisfy me.

I said that idea a few weeks back. Finally its come true

hehe.. I remember those from high school. We had a physics teacher from Trinidad, with this triffic rich accent, and he had a little yarn ball critter he called "Dancing Charlie" He'd stick it on the generator and it's legs would bob up and down in an amusingly spazmatic fashion.
I can still hear him saying "Go Chahley go!"

Apologies but this sounds like a hair raising project
Agree steam not so good though, unless the driving band goes to an ajoining room!

I have got something smilar to it.
Not really a generytor.
It is a 1920's electric shocker
Small wooden base with a coil on it and two handles....
Has got a knob on the site with wich you can pull a kind of stick out of the coil...then the shock gets higher....
I once took the whole stick out and touched the handle..
I found me again under the table lying on the floor...
Felt like a car hit me....
I operated with a normal battery (4-6 Volts) or with a generytor (like the wilesco ones)

Those electric fly swatters they sell here pack a good jolt for something that runs off a pair of AA cells.
Seems it didn't take long for them to put big thick plastic saftey guards over the wires, and then they vanished from the stores altogether... stupid nanny state

Just don't put your tongue on near the generator, and wait for charge to build.
Bad experience once, that wasn't worth the $20 I got for it

Ouch! Having been stung by a wasp on my tongue I can imagine how that felt.

Now that would hurt. Pass me a Van de graph anytime over a wasp

YIKES! I am allergic, the last Wasp sting I had was on my arm and they had to cut my shirt off as it was cutting off circulation due to the swelling, if I was stung on the tongue I fear I would suffocate.

I got stung this spring as the base of my little finger when I was getting out of the truck and smooshed a paper wasp that was sitting on my door.
Couldn't blame the little bugger, really, but that sure hurt like hell.
Did a lot of research on wasp stings that day too, so I did learn something that I'll not forget, such as the fact that the sting is *supposed* to hurt like hell due to a chemical in the venom.... Never knew that before.
Made me feel better that I wasn't a wuss after all because it still stung upwards of 5 hours later

Saw someone stung in the throat after drinking a can of Fanta with a wasp in the can-
Coincidently they had drunk it at Roath Park Lake Cardiff, (maybe had been watching the Moose fleet)
OUCH!

I know that if I were there watching th eMoose Fleet I would be giving the fleet my full attention and not notice anything about a Soft Drink. Plausible in my mind.

LOL
I've been quite well behaved lately
My track record at secondary school is:
1 exclusion
Roughly 100 dinnertime detentions
1 Friday night detention
Parents called in god knows how many times
Countless letters sent home
Been on report once

I bet if I got a dentntion I would not live to see the next day........or possibly not want to see it.About 10 pops with a belt straghtents you out alot more than you woudl think.

lol James you have quite a record.
I screw around all the time but I've never had a dentention,
been sent to the office, or been suspended. Probalby
had a teacher yell at no more than a couple times since I've
been in middle through high school. lol
Its not that I dont fool around, its just that I know when, where,
and how to do it properly
