Weeden 14
Hi there!
My name is Mark and I'm new here.
I was given a Weeden 14 that was my fathers when he was a child. Since he would have been 92 in two weeks, that makes this pretty old indeed.
It seems to be in quite nice shape:
It runs well.
I'm hoping I can get some information here about it. In pictures seen on the web, in some there is a (I'm assuming a dummy) governor above the cylinder. I'm hoping someone has some pics of this, or a drawing so I can make a new one. Also, it seems to be driven from a pulley attached to the cylinder, but I don't know what drives this pulley.
Last thing, my father had put a pipe plug in the end of the cylinder, apparently the "cap" had come loose. In pics there appears to be a cap that's peened in place. It this so?
Any help would be very much appreciated
I'm a machinist by trade ans a CNC programmer by occupation, with a small machine shop in my garage, so I feel confident I can make any replacement parts; I just need to know what to make.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me
Mark

Welcome Mark
Nice Weeden
Governor is available, one forum member knows a collector who would sell one to you.
If you're intent on making one yourself I can provide pics.
As far as running it- a drive belt (or simply a tied string) runs between the pulley located in front of the pillow block ( first thing on the flywheel axle before the linkage for the cylinder rods) and the small pulley at the bottom of the pole that govenor slips over.
Again welcome

Hi Mark, welcome from Indiana!
Don't have a Weeden 14 myself, but I do know you can get parts including the faux governor, from the following source:
http://www.classictintoy.com/
The faux governor is simply a lead cast piece as I recall...it slips over the rod like post and twirls for visual effect. If your 14 is also missing it's burner, I think Classic Tin Toys also makes a repro burner and possibly safety valves.
Again, welcome to our forum...it is an enjoyable place to gather info and share photos and videos of our hobby.
cheers,
Roger

G'day and
ebay can be a good source of photos too. That particular model series comes up with some regularity.
Of course the problem with browsing ebay is that you will inevitably end up buying a second engine...and then a third.. and a fourth... And then you will be lost

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I was going to give you the link to a spare parts dealer but I see Rog has already beat me too it.
I do like the look of those old Weedens but have been told they are pretty fragile with all the lead parts on them, but yours seems to of survived quite well.

Hi Mark,
Not the best photo
Height is 29mm width from outside balls 24.5mm and appears to be made of lead
I hope this helps
Since you're a machinist where would you suggest I go to have thin steel approx 12" wide such as used in household heating ducts rolled into tubes approx. 1 1/4" diameter?

Thanks for the picture and dimensions.
I'm sure I can come up with something from that.
As far as the tubes, try posting at CNCzone.com; they have a section for RFQ's for more than just machined parts. There may be someone there that can do what you want; there are a lot of talented people there.
Thanks again

Welcome to the forum.
Do you have the original burner for the engine? Look what this one went for on ebay:

No I didn't get the burner. At a price like that I probably won't get an original. Probably try to make something. Anyone know what the original was made of?
Thanks
