What I've been up to. The Jack Mine Engine

I've been working on this for months and finally completed in time for my grandson's (Jack) 6th birthday.  A machinist built Elmer Verburg design engine made from bar stock.

Plans are available free on the net and there are quite a few designs to chose from.

Bought a lathe at the beginnng of the year and in making this did I learn alot of what not to do

Many pieces had to be remade as I went along but happy to say never had to go pass a third attempt.

Very nice, Al. Obviously a lot of milling as well as turning.
Where did you find the plans?
I've googled to no avail.

Also known as a James Coombes Steam Engine.

That is a fine looking engine Al, your grandson will be proud to own that.

That’s a little gem Bigal.

May I ask what size lathe you bought. I’m toying with the idea of getting a mini lathe but not sure what size tasks I may be able to do with it.

This may seem like a silly question to an experienced machinist but as I do not have a work shop is it a practical idea to set up a mini lathe indoors, clean up  and pack away each session or is there going to be too much coolant/lubricant flying around to make this possible.

Cheers Mick

What a great piece of engineering Al.

I'm sure Jack will love it.

His grandad has certainly done him proud.

It looks fantastic. Well done!

A very nice engine , beautifully finished .

Not an easy task for a beginner , congrats on a what must be a steep learning curve for a novice machinist .

Well done bigal .

Mick,  I bought a lathe-drill-nmill combo machine from Harbor Freight.  It weight almost 500# and is in my basement.
Never have used coolant and the model forum I belong to doesn't feel it's neccessary or pracitical for the home hobbiest.
