I'm with Andy...the open topped cylinder and lagged on plate the piston pushes against would make it seem like a powered crusher that you CAREFULLY drop cans in from the top. You guys must be mega recyclers!!!

That is flat-out amazingly good engineering.
It could be a commercial product if only the brute parts weren't so spendy.

Well this one was free to build. We found all the parts laying around. It took a couple of days to build though, ran into a few problems along the way. It was very heavy and clumsy to carry down our basement steps.
