What lies beneath!
rusted chrome on my SR1
Almost brand new chrome
Badly rusted chrome on my TE1
Much of an improvement!!
The secret?
Lots of soapy water to remove the loose crap and some brasso/metal polish.
Once the crud is removed lightly polish with some metal polish, start with the sides and don't rub too hard or too much. Resist the temptation to use steel wool or wet and dry paper, you will end up with something shiney yes...just shiney metal! Put it next to your other models and it will look dull!
The older models seem to have a thicker plating on them than the newer ones, but ive had the same success with both!
works for burners too:

One of my SR1As came in unfired condition but the chrome was very rusty, I decided to clean it up as best I could and did precisely what you just described.

Don't get me wrong ive had a few that have been totally gone but for every one of them you'll find a nice suprise under the crap

Although I occasionally bash a boiler in, I usually try to do the least evasive methods first and was quire surprised that the chrome actually came out looking brand new. In fact I do not think that one can even fine any pitting. However the Scuttle has a bit of rust in it and I think that will be the scuttle that I will use with the one that I fire.
Sometimes a little bit goes a long way, and I am referring to effort in this case.

Yup! best to take your time aswell! I never rush a restoration job otherwise things can go wrong and have done in the past
Ive learnt a hell of a lot on the way though, better methods etc

Some excellent results there MM, really suprised how well they have come up.
My N&B SR1 has some black pitting spots showing through the chrome, will have to give it another go with the Brasso, but they do want some shifting.

wow that is excellent MM!!!
Right I'm going to have to borrow Grandads brasso bottle and do mine!
Does it work wonders on SP engines?

It should do depending on how bad/good they are.
Good luck

I am still deciding if I like the chrome looking wheels or the ones like mine has the best. They both look good though.

It's to be expected unfortunately because of the heat

I know its not Mamods best idea ever. On my Brooklands Tourer I clean the bonnet but leave the vent holes. It gives a very pleasing slight blackening around the top of the holes which just looks right to my eye.
