What solder ?ok im going to be doing a solder job on a rough sp2 which will be coming soon and the pipe has come of at the boiler and engine frame. So i ask what type of solder to use i used lead solder in the past and it was crap so what sort should be used? and this goes for all engines soldering.

Use lead based PLUMBERS solder! you need a decent blowtorch too!

1mm tin/lead electrical solder usually does a good job, silver based solders require much more heat
Leaded solders definately run in the joint better than unleaded.
The main reason for solder not flowing into the joint, is not cleaning surfaces properly & lack of flux.

i have a blowtorch so heat is not an issue

Just enough heat to melt the solder in all round is all thats required . Warm the area to be soldered gently, remove torch & touch joint with solder wire, if it doesn't flow warm agian, remove flame, touch joint with solder & so on. Too much heat & the solder won't flow into the joint, it just boils the flux away too quickly.

aye ill be using the strongest as the pipe is on top of the boiler and gets very hot dont want it to melt

Don't silver solder it otherwise the bloody boiler will come apart

Top of the boiler should get too hot, tin/lead mixture ('soft solder') should be ok.
1mm is about the right diameter not to have solder running everywhere. Tin/lead plumbers solder is the same thing just bigger diameter & tends to go everywhere if your not careful
If you have a 'maplins' locally they sell 1mm solder in various tin/lead/silver mixtures.

As most people said Lewis, use lead based solder, the thinnest you can find, and use flux.
Don't worry about it melting. As long as there is water in the boiler, it won't melt.
I use this stuff and have never had a problem with it

niceany videos of people soldering,??in the toyshop steam book,it says in the back if u have a big iron for soldering jobs, but like u say mm torch is prolly best:)

I wouldn't use an iron under any situation!
Just apply your flux, heat and dab the solder on, don't hold it there and torch it to death otherwise you get soldering swimming pools
