What were Mamod sales figures?

Hi all just getting started into the mamod thing and realise already I will have to make more room in the "junk cupboard" as I embark on some repair/restoration projects.

I am curious to know if there are any sales figure or data of Mamods popularity in the SE range days.?

Growing up in the 1960's and 70's I always remember them as being "big boys toys" and I was not getting one!!!

With a bit of elbow greese I can now put that right

thanks

Welcome from Bournemouth.

You will find the book 'Mamod, The story of Malins Models' by P.S. Malins helpful.
They do pop up on e-bay UK or someone on the forum might have one for sale.

Austins went about 7-8 years ago.

hi mike from australia. i know how you feel same here in australia they were big boys toys.i had a friend in the late sixties whos father and uncle were into the real thing and he got for xmas a te1a . i was     with envy. i spent many long hrs at his place steaming up his engine.(under his fathers watchful eye of course. then came the scandal in the early 70s which put paid to mother allowing me to have one. this is something that i too am putting right!!!

Hi there

If you are after a price list, they are in the member file sharing area, if that helps
Here is one from the 60's (will take you to the thread)

Also, they must have done quite well. I think? in 1972 the TE1a was toy of the year with it's biggest rival being scalextric slot cars

I believe just before one Christmas in the 70s a child had an accident with a meths fired mobile and was badly burnt. The media went to town on it and that event pretty much was the start of the downturn of Mamods fortunes.
It was never proven that Mamod was at fault but the trial by media had done its job.

I think that was the reference

Nanny state, and the media have a lot to answer for, regarding kids development/ imagination.

i started a paper round when i was eleven and started to save up.te1a s were in every toy store in town. i saved up the $22 to buy one went down to the shop only to be told they are all gone and they dont make them anymore and are dangerous! i was goning to keep it at my friends place so mother wouldnt find out.! a brand new malvernstar bike was $59 (i can buy a bike from china for that price now!) in 1980 my uncles got a te1a for pops 80th birthday! i was surprised they found one. my grandfathers opion of the te1a was " it doesnt look like a traction engine..well not like anything ive worked on" he just stored it in the cupboard.my grandfather was famous in the area for saving a t/e after it slipped it gears going down a very steep hill.the driver had jumped for it leaving my pop alone. he did say jump but it was going too fast to jump so he took over the wheel. he was given his steam ticket for it.
