Whats your most unique engine?

What engine do you have in your collection that no-one else on the forum has?

Doesn't have to fancy or expensive just one that you think no-one else on this forum has.

If you have more than one just post your favourite.

For me that would have to be my Renown Steam roller.
(Yes they are Mamod back wheels on it)

steamyjim

Can it include scratchbuilt engines?
MooseMan

Clyde Model Dockyard outboard engine - without a doubt the rarest engine in my collection.

tmuir

Yes if its your most unique engine.
Mamodman123

I don't think anyone else has a Hobbies SC3

Lewis

has to be my sp6
no one else has one i dont think
we all thought it would be crap but turned out to be a great engine

steamyjim

I have several unique engines (mainly because i go for scrathbuilt engines) But heres one of my favourites. I was given it by a man while i was exhibiting at a steam rally. Made of all sorts. The boilers a empty bomb sheel thing, the flywheels a commutator of an old motor and the wheels are steel pipe with tin spokes aroldited in. Strange thing is plug a air line on it it runs sweet as a nut

IndianaRog

Jensen 51 Replica by IndianaRog

Since I sort of created this Jensen 51 replica to mimic the real thing, I'm positive no one has one quite like it on or off the forum.

This replica began life as a late 1960's Jensen model 50, acquired Feb. '06 and by Dec. '06 it was reborn as a reasonably accurate replica of a Jensen 51, an engine of which only 27 were officially made by Jensen themselves. This is sort of like the 28th with a few extra bells and whistles.

It features a 5 inch x 9 inch boiler heated by 1620 watts with variable control of that wattage. Cast iron engine with a 5 inch diameter cast iron flywheel. 1 inch bore/1.25 inch stroke. It has a functional governor, functional condensate stack, functional engine driven feedwater pump and a working water tower that will feed almost a gallon of water to the boiler and allow for 8 hour runs at low speeds

The engine simultaneously turns two AC generators that power 2 AC lamps and a DC generator that powers 2 DC lamps OR a DC motor. Input amperage, generators, lamps and motor are all controlled from a console via switches and analog metering.

Since completion in Dec. '06 I have logged 55 hours of running time per the hour meter on the console. Great fun just throwing this or that switch to see what happens to the engine speed, voltage and milliamp output and brightness of the lamps or speed of the DC motor.

At 75 plus pounds of overall weight, it sits in one spot and stays there...not too mobile!!! Steam output was so great that I had to install a ceiling exhaust fan above it to avoid turning my workshop into a rainforest.

Here 'tis.

John Chapman

My Jensen 75. The meths fired version.

Chris

My small collection is all bog standard, but then I am happy to run them all.

Only thing I have that no one else on the forum has is my homemade poppop boat.

The advantage of not having anything unique is that then you will always find someone on here who can answer your questions!!
flywheel61

For me it's a tossup between my prewar SE2, my Parken and my Welden.

I think the Parken wins as it's alovely little engine with clean lines like the Mamods.

Cheers
IndianaRog

Chris, looking again at that Parken I can see that it must have influenced the Steamco brothers in the design of their first engine, the engine on pillars is very much the same on both.

cheers,
Rog
Griffin

Very common and still in production, but I think there is only 1 Jensen #55G on this Forum. Having said that IndianaRog has a nice early #55 without the generator bit.

flywheel61

Yes, Rog ,your right, I think Tony memtioned that somewhere before. I'd like to add a Steamco to my collection but there are so many engines, like the horizontal Scorpion, that keep coming up it makes things so difficult, .

Cheers

Chris

This is going to be tough with the few but very hardcore Jensen collectors on here. I offer my very first steam engine, a 1961 Model #10 by Jensen. It is configured more like a Model #25G than a traditional #10, but this model does have the #10 designation on the ID plate. It has a pressed metal engine base and a cast iron generator. The Jensen online museum identifies it as the last production Model #10. It is pictured in my avatar. Though I have yet to see another one I don't think it is too rare. Who else has one of these?

D.
IndianaRog

Hey D...

As one of those Hardcore Jensenites I can say I neither have one like yours, nor have I seen one in person. My guess is NO one else on the forum has one like it...not a bad achievement for a first engine!!!!

It is an interesting piece in that it reflects a transition from Jensen making ONLY cast iron/wood base types to the steel types comprising the new hobby line beginning in the early '60's...fact that it still has the cast generator and wood base is indicative of Mr. Jensen always using up components before switching over to a complete new design. Yours had made the switch on the engine itself, but still retained the old style generator and base.

A good find on your part,

Rog
SillyBilly

Pretty sure no one else has it?
Mamodman123

I guess unique could mean a few things:

I'm pretty sure this is UNIQUE:

IndianaRog

Could that be the inspiration for the Beetles song...Yellow Submarine???

A great range of engines on this thread. I do like Tony's Renown!

Mine would have to be my David Auld verticle.

(i brought in 2005)

Cranko

There;s some really brilliant gear here . Good to see it. Thanks for starting this thread Tony
Stilldrillin

Just found these pics. This is one of my Big Lads.
Needs a little work to cure some small sightglass/ drainvalve leaks, then I might mount the Stuart horizontal.

Or, maybe not.

IndianaRog

Gorgeous piece David...hardly a week goes by when someone on this forum comes up with a brand/style I have never seen before.
Thanks for sharing your Big Lad!!

Rog
Graham-Jilly

lovely engine there david
im sure the stuart would go well with it

Dampfzauberer

Hi, here comes my most unique engine.
And no, it is not any of my antique engines....

It is a "little" twincylinder steam engine I build during my practical course.
Made in march 2002...I was 15 at that time...
It is made of solif stainless steel, exept the flywheel what is cast aluminium.

Unfortunately it does not work, I made it with very simple tools (no lathe or something, just drill and saw) but I like it very much.
By the way, its weight is about 5-7 Kg
IndianaRog

Mirko, it might not work, but it is a thing of beauty and I bet you have it proudly on display. Very nice!!

Yes, it has got a special place in my showcase
I really like it!
mc_mc

Looks like you could hide a little motor in there somewhere to turn it over slowly. That would look very nice.

Hehe..well that will not work because:
1. the flywheel is not fidex on the axle...
2. the fits are done very imprecise by me
and the machine would wedge when turned
SillyBilly

'tis a big engine though, I like it.

That could all be sorted out though? Solder (or glue) the flywheel and then file down your pistons. Still very nice looking as it is.
Dampfzauberer

Yes, maybe i could fix it with glue, but I also like it as is....
A very nice paperweight
Stilldrillin

Nice slab of engineering there Mirco!

I like it..... Very much.

Well, for me, it's a no-brainer - the SE3c

http://uk.geocities.com/rolywilliams/mamod_3c.html

But, if you only count mass produced engines, I suppose the rarest is the Bing 130/466:

Graham-Jilly

SE3c definately unique

Yeh, unique; but not being a working engine, does it count? Besides, what's there is not really unusual. It's just half missing.

Don't wory, MM, you'll like it when you see it

I swear I saw that on Antiques Roadshow, where a young lad was displaying his ENORMOUS collection of steam engines. Was that you per chance?

My most unique engine is a gas fired 2-8-2 with simplified walchearts....in 00 gauge! It will kick Hornby's poxy engines arse when its working

I'll post a pic when I get my camera back.

Yes that was SJ, he's our most famous collector, that episode was even aired in Australia.

crikey!! That is one hefty oscillator (heftier than my home brew!), just look at the size of the big end.

Shame it doesn't work, it would have uber power output!
PTLRcecil

Although I have multiple heavily modified mamods I would have to say that my most unique one is the tram built from a TE1.closly followed by the single fairlie on the right.

Then there is also the wee Im not sure what it is muilt from a mike chaney Kitten and a steamlines riedol.
tmuir

A tram built from a TE1

Can you give us a few more photos showing how it was done?
SillyBilly

I can assure you both those locos are a work of art (I'm very chuffed to say I have een them in the flesh )
