Well done John, Does anyone have his actual email address? This, I've just realized, is a rhetorical question. He must have supplied it to join this Forum. Would one of the Mods/Admin be willing to write him a quick note? I too have seen the, (quite large) list of other forums he subscribes to. Leaving a PM is no use, however, if he doesn't log on and pick it up. I know we can see when someone last posted but have we any way of knowing when they last logged on? |

I was working on a joint project one time and spending a few hours modelling content in 3d studio max alongside a group of developers. One day the guy I was working alongside just didn't show. No response to emails, PM's. I guess he just lost interest and enough was enough. It was a real shame though, I liked the guy and the previous day was in good humour and still had lots of content that was in progress. I'd seen him post on other forums afterwards too. Just no content to the informal emails I sent asking if he was ok and what was up.
It's a real shame when that kind of thing happens. People have their own reasons for doing things. It's awkward when there's no mention why they left or if everything is ok though. I liked Reids prescence on here. And his lyrical wit! Added a certain something extra to the forum! Hope he's ok. Alan

... he posted that he might one day go away, his interests having moved on to something else - which is totally all right! Interests change ... yet, knowing that his health is not of the best, it would be great to have some kind of message from him. Just, that he's okay and toying with something else, a Ford Model T, or learning how to make Fabergé Easter Eggs or doing Sudoku blind-folded.
Anything.
We miss you, Reid. And we won't give up until we've learned that you're perfectly fine and are now in to baking French Pastry or creating more fine poetry, as you've done before. And then we'll leave you alone. Reid!

I immediately sent him an e mail which was returned ' Unknown User' It is worth noting, however, that he has not just stopped posting on our forum but on every other forum as well. Scanning the several forums to which he subscribed, writing, poetry, antiques and theremin, reveal a picture of an unusual, interesting and articulate individual who had only just begun to contribute his real potential to this forum. I hope he is alright. |

A Theremin is an unusual musical instrument, most famous for its use in Good Vibrations and in many 50s science fiction movies.

Geez.. I remember seeing one of those things in a cartoon once. Didn't know it was real.
I'm on the concerned list. I've known people who announce it when they leave, who have a fight and leave, or slowly fade away until they're gone, but I've never known someone to simply up and disappear from a place where they had friends, without even a passing mention in courtesy, because of a sudden and catastrophic change in interests. So I'm concerned, because I've also had a few OL friends who've vanished, only to find out much later that they had passed on abruptly. |

I always have the weird sensations when I am referring to one of you to my wife or neighbor..I say something like,"I was talking with a friend in England ..." and i my wife gives me that look like--"Who do you KNOW in England.?. you mean an online forum member you have never met??
t is odd to refer to people - most of whom you have never met face to face, as friends. .. But then I feel uneasy about people whom you write back and forth to, as not being friends. I propose they / you all are, and as legitimate in the term as a neighbor is ... I mean how many persons many years ago had "pen pal" friends whom they never met except through words-- we get words , and pictures!! In my espresso machine forum that I am a member of - I have had the great fortune to have gotten to meet almost 20 people over the course of 2 years and it made the on line conversations improved- but in my head mostly. So - I have only been here a short while - but personalities are sprouting among you and I resolve to at least acknowledge when my enthusiasm wanes. I enjoy the interaction greatly and since so many are in the UK or the Midwest, face to face is a low percentage shot... so words it is!! I for one am not apt to disappear suddenly unless a car wreck or sudden illness betakes me. What say you Musketeers? You are stuck with me |

I can echo the sentiment, Mo. One of my (very few) best friends lives a 2 day drive away. Known them for 10 years, and haven't seen them in 8, but that really doesn't matter so long as I've got email and a phone. | ||||||

I have a friend that lives about 400 miles from me, we meet about twice a year, but contact each other several times a week via email.
I consider several of the forum members here to be friends and feel that they have proven to be worthy of the honor of being considered a good friend. Plus, I am by religion a Friend, Religious Society of Friends. I think that if Reid decides to come back, he will, but if he doesnt want to, that is his right. I hope he is in good health, but just following another interest, he seems to be the type that gets really involved in what he is up to and thus probably just moves on to whatever he is now doing. Maybe the Wilesco has been taken as far as he wanted to go with it. |

I finally succumbed and called Reid today. I got an anonymous answering machine, and left a long and detailed message with all my
contact information. Waiting for a reply. It would seem to me, particularly for those of us in remote locations that it may be appropriate to set up an ICE system. (In Case of Emergency). I would suggest sharing your personal contact info with another trusted forum member. Thus, in the event anything like this happens again, we would rapidly be able to reassure ourselves that everything was alright. |

That is why one would choose someone they trust. I know that over a dozen forum members have my mailing address and at least two have my phone number. So much of this information is available on the Net, as far as that goes, a good old fashioned Phone Book has the info too. | ||||||

If I may interject briefly.
I agree with all the above comments. I had primarily seen this as a system to be used by the older members of the forum who live in more remote locations. I doubt it would be of much value to the UK membership a lot of whom know each other personally already. Nor would I advocate that, under any circumstances, such information be published on the public part of the forum. For the several reasons stated by others this would probably not apply to any of the younger members. The situation with Reid at present led me to suggest the idea. Whilst it may be that he has just decide to abandon the forum, the total lack of any information has many members genuinely concerned. I also realized that If I was to disappear suddenly there is no way anyone on this forum would ever find out what happened. Few know my last name. No one has my physical address. My home phone number is unlisted. No one knows the name of my business. I am the only person with access to my P.O. Box, my wife has her own. Dead Ends everywhere. Assuming anyone was concerned.

I'm afraid not Tom, I have called twice, got an anonymous prerecorded answering machine, and left detailed messages with all my contact info on both occasions. I have also called on a few other occasions and just hung up when the machine picked up. I did note that the phone rang four times on every occasion before the machine picked up. |

If you like the man, give him the privacy he wants and if he decides to come back he will. More than a certain number of phone calls etc and it could be interpreted as stalking. |

I am concerned too. I googled him up and found several other forums (theramin, poetry, etc) where he had been posting actively and they all have nothing from him in the last 4-6 weeks. I am beginning to fear the worst.
