Who ever thought my lego would need upgrading...Back in 1998 I bought a Lego Mindstorms robotics kit and after a bit of a play it was carefully packed away for safe keeping.
As its been rainy the last week or so I thought I would drag it out and my son and I could build something with it.
Dragged out the CD for the computer and realised of course the software was written for Win95 and has no chance on working on windows XP.
Emailed Lego asking if they had newer software and within one hour (not bad considering I emailed Lego Australia and it was 10pm) I got a response yes there was, I needed a new CD of RIS2 which of course I have to buy from them....So much for Lego never becoming outdated.

It's good to hear that companies set up some time ago aren't stuck in their ways. I'm not really a fan of Lego, I'm a K'Nex person:
1 metre high, battery electric motor. Soon to be converted so that it can be powered by hand or a steam engine for the Amberley gala

I prefer Meccano to Lego but as a boy I couldn't afford Meccano but always got a box of Lego from my grandfather at Christmas.
I've bought a lot of Duplo lego second hand for my son and he loves the stuff though.

Admittedly Meccano is my first option for a construction toy. K'Nex I think is slightly more expensive, but like Meccano it can be made into many things. Plus K'Nex can be made without the need for a screwdriver and spanner

Is there a Knex kit to make a roller coaster?
I've seen a roller coaster built of similar stuff to that and it look pretty good.

There have been a fair few K'Nex roller coasters. I might get one soon to go with the ferris wheel. They operate the same way as the prototype too! I'm not sure if they are currently producing one...

I like meccano but it is slow due to needing to do up all those pesky little nuts and bolts that don't suit fat fingers!
Lego is great, but doesn't seem so sturdy, or so suitable for playing with steam. I keep meaning to buy myself a set of technic lego, but I expect wife would kill me after buying the meccano.
Never played with knex, after my time I guess.

I built that ferris wheel a while ago. I have one of the rollercoaster sets.

I used to love legos!
A windows 95 cd should work with XP. I have a windows 3.0 diskette i use with my XP laptop all the time. I also have Simcity 2000 on my XP laptop, which the game was made for windows 95.

Look under the programming section here, there might be something useful: http://www.crynwr.com/lego-robotics/
This looks interesting too: http://www.mapageweb.umontreal.ca...ned/lego/4-RCX/PRO-BOT/index.html
