Wilesco CollectionHello, Thought I would show you my Wilesco collection. I never intended to have this many but they kept showing up. This first picture is of my D18, D5, and D15. The D15 along with a Jensen 25 were my first two engines and the D15 is the only one I haven't fired. My son gave me the D18 and the D5 came along with some accessories I bought off e-bay.
Family photo
The next five engines are all the older grey based ones. What I especially like about this five is that they are all 110 volt electrics.
D8
D101
D20
D24
D28
I was able to get all of last five off e-bay and they were all in very good condition except for a little clean up. The only exception was the D28. The first time I fired it up I noticed it had a slow leak, apparently from the boiler. I have started to take the boiler apart but have come to the point where I will have to start desoldering some pipe and fittings. Since I have never done any torch soldering before, I am a little hesitant about tackling a relatively rare engine on my first attempt. Any hints or suggestions how to dismantle and repair the boiler would be appreciated.
That's all for now. Thanks. Take care.

One question;
Am I the only person who owns a Wilesco D-14?

Hi Dennis.
Sometimes I use a soldering iron or gun to desolder tubing.
Keep it on the spot long enough and it will usually come loose enough to pull apart.
Of course all the water must be out of it or it'll never come apart.
Blow it out with a compressor if you can.
When re-soldering it helps to "tin" the pieces going back together.
That is, clean them, heat them, apply flux and a small amount of solder to each piece being joined.
If possible, wipe away excess solder with some 0000 steal wool.
Push them together and apply the heat.
Very little additional solder is needed to make a good connection.
Practice on some scrap tubing or metal.

A very nice collection of Wilesco's.
Are you sure you have to desolder fittings and the steam line to get the boiler out of the firebox? The D28's boiler is hard soldered so I assume the fittings are hard soldered too and I doubt that Wilesco first assembled the engine and then finished soldering the boiler.

Do they silver solder any of their lines?

I have no clue. I don't own a D28, only a D24 which steam line has a screw fitting.

None of the steam lines on wilesco engines are silver soldered.
Only the boilers from the gig engines, like D24, D28 and D32, are silver soldered.
But for putting them together more easily, they are simply soft soldered (for the steam lines)
