Wilesco D48 Ships Engine restoration

Finidhed it!

This is how it looked like right after unpacking it:

This is what i did:
-took everything apart and cleaned
(boiler, gas tank, engine)
-soldered back a broken-off union nut (reversing block)

That was it (i thought.....)

Then there appeared a problem:
The engine just won't run....not with a bit of air and not wich much air....oil was also senseless
It just turned 1/2 turn and then stopped by itself
It cost me 2 hours to get the fault....

But first here's the photo of the first steaming.
By the way, this is my first gas fired steam engine

Now you sure want to know WHAT the hell was the fault?!?
It was so simple i could cry:
The red frame was a millimer bent.....that's all
The bottom of the frame was not in a line, it was a little curved where the cylinders sit.
This caused the engine's control to work imprecise..so the two cylinders simply stopped each other....

A nice looking engine.

Here is an appropriate named model boat kit for that engine - https://shop.graupner.de/webuerp/servlet/AI?ARTN=2126

Although I recall a past Forum member saying that these boats would not steam properly, and required the position of the paddle boxes adjusted to get the right waterline, etc.

I've actually got an electric version of this kit to finish building one day.

It looks like you are getting it going just fine. I see all kinds of possibilities for the Marine engines.
Les

That has cleaned up nicely and is a very good looking engine.

Ah, yes the engine turned out beatuful!
Runs like a champion (better than the german football team..haha)

To be honest i am not that much in boats, i think i'm gonna keep it as it is now on the piece of wood.

I think it also can be used as a stationary model.
I like to play with that reversing lever
Also, the gas burner is very fine!
You really can adjust the ammount of steam the boiler gives by controlling the gas valve

that's Mirko. now I want one.

Well done Mirko

Well its going now, thats probably the reason someone sold it.

Looks great, runs.......kinda smooth

Mirko, nice restoration and a unique engine.  I have never noticed before, but I didn't know the Wilesco D48 was oriented "sideways" to the direction the prop shaft would turn...very interesting design.

The shift lever looked like it was directional AND speed...great concept.

The engine can be used like here, for driving directly the prop or sideways, for paddle wheeler...

The shift lever is in fact the "one-in-all" thing.
IT has little holes for hooking it up on a servo, so you can controll the speed of your boat and reverse it if you like
(also, it is just panted metal, this is why i did not touch it for too long in the video )

Nice find Mirko- I have not seen one of them run before!!

I got one of those a long time ago, it was sold under the name Graupner, obviously they are made by Wilesco and repackaged as a Graupner product along with instructions bearing thier name.
