Wilesco D5 running or: how the Wilesco ESBIT buner works
Had a small steaming today.
Ran with 2 tablets and a snifter of...water
Over 20 mintes long
Was powerfull enough to drive my newes aquisition, the spindlepress.
Sorry, it became a very dak video..but i hope you can get it ok.
Works good...engine and driving model....
the wilesco is very silent, too....
I an very happy with this little fellow
Dampfzauberer
Made also a second video:
the instruction says, with the new (well, at that time new) burner it is possible to regulate the fire....so i tried that out!
Fully pushed in it burns the strongest....pulled out a little bit (till the triangular edge) it burns the smallest.
This is due to the vent-holes in the burnerslide and its holder....
You can see clearly a difference in the video
Till now i did not realise that...
So with this tric we could save a bit of esbit and can make the engine run more slowly
Les Marsh
Nice video's, the engine runs sweetly and you wouldn't have thought the air holes would make that much difference.
Nick
I am glad you guys told me about the holes, I'll have to try it out.
Does the esbit burn slower too/Last longer?

I missed that part.
johnreid
I am going to have to try that also
Here is my D5, not trying to steal the thread, doing this for comparison purposes.
Dampfzauberer
No worries, please
Yes, have a try and tell us if you also can see a difference in the burning/ heating proces
johnreid
I will do so now, be back in a short while. No batteries in the camera for a Movie though

The results are in, I just ran the D5 and moved the burner in and out. The speed varies as much as 50% or more! I am AMAZED!
I looked down into the firebox from above and noticed that I can see the circles when the burner is pushed in and can then adjust the flame by watching the Circles appear and disappear. I am tempted to get another D10 or maybe the kit version as I like the ability to work on th kit versions much more than the Factory versions.
Thanks Mirko for your demonstration because I never would have tried it if I had not seen your demonstration.
Nick
I will be trying this in my D24. Thanks!
Dampfzauberer
If you look closer at the frontpart of the wilesco burner (the part right after the handle) you can see symbolds spamped into the metall.
It just shows the above mentioned fuction:
Pulled in= big flame
Pushed out= small flame
On old burner's this stamping can be seen more clearly (i think that's due to abraison of the stamping tool)
Nick
I just had a look at mine and I can see the arrows.
If you didn't know this tip, the diagram can be a little difficult to understand.

Excellent work lads, I have a small Wilescoe as well, it has no whistle D4? I will give it a go, I have seen the imprint on the burner and thought to myself - yea as if that's gonna work - now I will see, Esbit tablets are dearer than Meths, so if they will burn longer thats great. Well done !
mc_mc
I'm going to check mine when I get in, it's a D10 but I remember seeing similar perforations on the burner tray. Then perhaps a little experimentation too.
Atticman
Amazingly simply yet so few of us knew.
Well done Mirko, guess it may be somewhere on the instructions?
Interesting to see it that will alter the speed of the mobiles as well?
Nick
John, have you tried it with the Fleischmann sice that has the holes?
johnreid
The burner holder in the Fleischmann is not like the Wilesco, that is the patented Burner that only Wilesco will have.

The burner slide is adjustable. The oxygen
supply and the flame height can be adjusted by moving the burner
slide in relation to the air holes of the burner slide guide in the boiler housing.
Yes it is in the Wilesco instructions, just proves how little people read the instructions first!

My Wilesco has no instructions, but if it did, I still probably wouldn't know.
johnreid
THe instructions are on the Web in PDF form, but to be honest, few understand what is meant there.
Nick
The diagram stamped on the burner isn't very clear either.
Mine was all covered in soot too.
CCairns
My first quote was from the Wilesco instructions available on www.wilesco.de Of course only current models are available.

The height of the flame can be adjusted by moving the burner slide in our out to correspond with the air holes.
This quote is available from the Wilesco instructions available on www.ministeam.com
Makes sense to me!
However I agree that Wilesco did not include the following diagram with all their instructions ( this is from the D305 Fire Truck Instructions on www.sell-it-easy.de ).

As i said, that's due to wearout of the stamping tool i think...
And yes, if you once or twice fired you engine up you burner will be already be sooted and dirty so you cannot see the imprint anymore
I also wonder why there still is no wonder-formula for cleaning those wilesco burners...
Like a cleaning tablet for calcified water boilers....hmm...wonder if a cleaning tablet for dentures would work ?
johnreid
Heated Meths would probably clean the burner. Watch for open flames though. OR, 409 degrease, as the Esbit remains left behind are Wax I believe

Can be! As the brown stuff gets a bit liquig when geating up...
Hmmm...let's see what we can do here...will try out
