Wilesco VI Striker

Like the Sausage Maker, not ideal video conditions, overcast, windy, a little late in the day, irritating clients calling me in the middle of the shoot, etc.

Windows Movie Maker did a little better this time.

Running on Gil's historic Jensen 25.

That guy works at it quickly doesnt he?
Loads of fun it looks like, however that is Richard and Andrews Jensen 25 not Gils although I am sure he would take it back if given to him
Have you rigged a dimmer or other such device to slow the Jensen down a bit more also. I had a Variac that worked wonders, but I think a normal Dimmer switch would work.

Definitely looking into it.  Had favored the 600 watt dimmer approach rather than the variac as I"m not that anal about the precision.  Am I wrong?
johnreid

For now I would do the dimmer, you only have one electric Steamer.
Nick

He can sure hammer away.

If you want to get a cheap variac that works good, this is the style I got off ebay. There are usually 3 to 5 on ebay at a time in this model, just type in "powerstat". The one I bought works great and is identical to this:

Les Marsh

He was sure working , maybe a bit too fast, but they sure are fun, and it is nice to see you have glued the English version of the readout on over the German original.
Just wait until you get the complete setup going and then you will have even bigger smiles on your faces.

P.S.  So will we.
steamyman

great accessory there.
Sandman

Jeez, that little guy works hard.
steamyjim

Thats great!

The variac Nick linked to is a good model, but usually end up going for over $50. I got one that needs some minor work as far as wiring it up and housing it but should be similar
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI....sPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=005
It takes a lot of shopping to find a good one for a low price. I have bid on over 50 in the past week before I got one for less than $28 plus shipping.

I have access to a 3 amp one, which I have borrowed and have been using this past week. I seems to work well with my Jensens, but is borderline too small. Once you have something and lose it, you miss it. I think the soot shorted mine out as the windings are Magnet wire that if the coating is tarnished it shorts out against itself. So odd what iis affected and what is not.

Have you a compressor so you could take the variac apart and give it a good blow though?
Nick

John, the one I linked usually goes between $50 & $70, if I was going to pay that much, I'd go for this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Metered-Varia...PageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I got mine for about $30 because I think everyone was scared to bid because it had "problem" written next to the switch.
johnreid

Yep having problem written on it probably kept the price down Just as a panel mount ( like mine ) can scare many off. If one has the money, buy a new one with a warranty, and those Chinese ones would be VERY tempting.
Mamodman123

Did he ever hit the top?

Great video guys!

Yes, but at a slower speed.  The number of lights lit is directly related to the length of time the hammer is in contact with the anvil.  The faster he goes the worse he does

In the handrail pics you can see the lights are lit all the way to the top........and he's stationary .

Thanks guys, but think I'll pass on the Variac, I have what I need right here to build a 600W, 15 Amp dimmer which will do for now.  If I get more electrics I may think again.
Nick

I was wondering how the lights worked, thanks for explaining it better.

Let us know how the dimmer works out.

Didn't get the pieces to the millworker today.  The landfill exploded at 9.00 am and they closed all the roads on the south side of the island.

Traffic was horrendous and they wouldn't let me back to my house until now.

Most are now open again, except immediately around the site, which unfortunately is on the way to Andrew's School.

I will now have to drive 15 miles to get there instead of 4.  Today he is launching the rocket he built himself, I want to be there, so will have to leave soon.
Nick

The landfill exploded?

If a newspaper article makes it to the internet, could you post a link?

Yours was very personal, John, mine merely an inconvenience.

The fire is out now but still smoldering.  We are about 3 miles downwind and the whole house stinks.

Second Article.
Les Marsh

Thanks for the article Richard, glad that there were no fatalities and you and your family are alright.
Can you let us know if they find the cause of the explosion please.

I can't remember where, but on someone's steam website the owner had wisely written that we never really own these pieces, we just have the good fortune to look after them for a while.
