Wilhelm Krauss Flying Carousel c1930Wilhelm Krauss Flying Carousel c1930
Dear Mr Manxman,
Thank you very much for the beautiful old carousel. Thank you for offering it to me. It will look really nice with our fairground. When it's working we will send you a video.
I can't wait for it to get here.

That is really nice Andrew!
Do you know if it is the same 'Krauss' that also built narrow gauge engines?

Chris,
As if you haven't already done more than enough here.
Do you have any further history?
Thanks,

Hi Andrew (and Dad) and it's a pleasure to send you the faiground ride. It needs a little work on it to make it perfect again but your Dad says no problems, so lets hope he can sort it out.
The Carousel was made by an old German Company. Wilhelm (the German way of saying William) Krauss made toys between 1895 and 1938. Unfortunatly, a big war stopped Krauss making toys and when the war finished, Kruass didn't start again.
Over the years of making toys Krauss sometimes made them by himself and sometimes with friends. To start with the company was called Krauss, Mohr and Company (1895 - 1903), then it was called Mohr and Krauss (1901 - 1923) and then to finish just called Wilhelm Krauss (1923 -1938).
Your ride has 3 sailors on it and was made nearly 80 years ago. That makes it very old. I think Krauss must have liked fairgrounds a lot. He didn't make steam engines but he did make loads of different rides. I've got quite a few pictures of other Krauss rides and I can post them on the forum if you want to see more.
The only sad thing is that I live on an island and you live on an island. It's been raining and very windy here over the last few days and that means that sometimes the post boat doesn't go (but I think it will today). Your parcel will have to travel from me to England and then to America and then on to you. That could take a couple of weeks. But I did post it this morning.
Let me know when it gets to you and I'll look forward to seeing it working with your other great rides.

Another Wilhelm Krauss round-a-bout of the same era.
Completely original and still working.

Just to give you an example of the extent of Chris's generosity this auction just ended on e bay:

Thank You Chris,
Yes, if you have the time, we would love to see more pictures.
Andrew is indeed a very lucky boy.

Chris is a very nice person, when one does something with Chris he is always concerned about you more than himself. A very commendable quality, top rate all the way.

To be honest I just like sharing in our hobby. I don't know anyone near me who really likes toy steam and the friends I have made on the forums mean a lot to me.
Oh well hold onto your wallet Richard. Here you go Andrew, more pics of Krauss rides. First of all the ride like yours (except sailors are in different uniforms) and areoplanes owned by Les.
This is another carousel but maybe a bit more expensive when built.
These are Ferris wheels. The first is the oldest and is close to 100 years old.
This one is the smallest of the Kruass models I've seen and still very nice.
This last pic is of swing boats and reminds me a little of the Wilesco ones and shows that even though these were made 70 years ago, the toy steam world has not changed very much at all.

A set of swingboats which still work.

Thanks Chris,
That was fascinating.
Didn't see as much of the description, dates and values from the book as on the original.
But what incredible diversity. I noticed on the original it was also designed as a wind up. Was that true for the others as well?

Now that's an interesting point. I think quite a few of the German tin toys that we all like were made as either steam or wind up during the 1930's.
A few of the earlier German mobiles I love, like cars and fire engines and even a bus were made as live steam or wind up. Bing was great at doing this but not the only one.

Watching this on e bay. Not really interested in the engine, but look at the 'parts'.

Les,
How many card tables do you own?
|
Les

The parts are a Fleischmann Sausage maker and two Krauss workmen.
Have e-mailed to see if he will post to the UK, if not, I will have to talk to John nicely.

My names not Nick.
No card tables, no room for them, just lots of shelves.

Les,
I would like the sausage maker. It's the only one other than yours that I've seen complete with sausages.

I think the accessories, which are kind of hidden from a typical search, are the better part of the auction. IMHO someone might get a bargain out of that auction.

Send photos. We would like to bid on the shelving contract for this collection. We can do Teak, Ipe, Wengue, as exotic as you like.

I also like the burner trays that these little ones have. Big enough for one whole tablet of esbit.
