Winchester Repeating Canon

Do any of our American canon friends know anything about Winchester Repeating Canon's on the small size not some big canon as there is one in a local sale tomorrow but it has the breach mechanism missing and they wont tell me is or what the reserve is - It look like this and i found the photo in this link   ..

Phil, those are wonderfully built, robust cannons that sell new for $600 USD.  Company has been making them for decades.  They are used as noisemakers for celebrations like the 4th of July etc.

12 inch barrel

16 inch overall length

15 pounds weight

shoots 10 gauge blank shotgun shells

The only limitation I see with that cannon is the use of those 10 gauge blank shotgun shells, they are expensive and hard to find in this country, maybe impossible in the UK.

Also, if it is missing the breech mechanism, it can't be fired, a wall hanger as we call it only.  Perhaps the breech mechanism can be purchased as a standalone part from the mfg., but that is unknown.

Rog, the breech mechanism may have been removed to make the cannon into a de-ac.  Otherwise it would need a police approved certificate to own here in the UK.

I think Steven is right on this, i think any working cannon that shoots projectiles would be classed as a firearm and would need a licence.

Dave i reckon you could very well be right and perhaps i should of spent time looking in some boxes to see if it was hid away from prying eyes. ..

Phil, that cannon is NOT designed to shoot projectiles, it is for making a boom only and designed to take the odd 10 gauge blank shotgun shells.  Might still be verbotten in the UK, but I wonder if "noisemakers" have their own classification????

Here you can buy them online shipped to your door with no permits, licenses or govt. involvement.  Of course if you abuse the privilage you might have an officer at your door with a neighbor noise complaint.

With the 4th approaching, I plan to give my golf ball mortar a good workout right off my back deck over the lake.  My neighborhood goes nuts with fireworks on the 4th and no one will think anything of it.

Ah i've just noticed it is a signal cannon Rog.

Not sure what the legal standing on those would be here and they probably are classfied separately like you say.

I agree that cannon would be perfect for 4th of July celebrations!!

You would even bee more surprised to hear that you have to be 18 years old and need a gun licence to use a blank gun in Germany... The blank gun also has to be testet by a government agency and has to be marked with a special stamp for blank guns.
Something like that canon with a 10 gauge caliber even if only capable to fire blanks would give you some umpleasant time at a criminal court or at least the prosecutor would impose a hefty fine on you.

I will top that one...

In Denmark firecrackers and anything above that which goes "boom" on the ground is prohibited by law, and you will get prosecuted by even owning anything of the sort

...stupid politicians now all of us "criminals" will have to make all our "dynamite" by our self in the shed instead of being able to buy good tested professionally produced items...

OK just got back from the auction sale and the cannon reached £170 but did NOT sell as it didn't reach the reserve - If the reserve was £200 then you have 17.5 fee's on top of this then you have to find the breach mechanism which was missing.

Sometimes we Americans take our freedoms for granted...not me, I appreciate every one of them and do all I can at the ballot box to retain them!!!
