workshop boiler gets quick upgradei made up a basic boiler so i could test my engines when i built them plus other items a few months ago i only had one bush in the top and i put a steampipe under the boiler to super heat the steam. some members have seen this boiler powering my engines.
i followed up with the making of this boiler
so today i upgraded it!! i made some more bushes and i put two experimental boiler tubes under the boiler. (more about this when i fire it. ) i also added two bushes on the end .to act as water level plugs or...............
or...
this is a totally general purpose boiler. it will act as a condenser...boiler... whistle tester (dry steam) plus it can used as a top up boiler with the right fittings.. this upgrade is a stepping stone towards lizs calliope.
the main calliope boiler is still to be built. i have 12 inches of thick walled brass tubing 3 1/4 in diametre reserved for this. so im just making sure of design features first.

The possibilties with that boiler are endless.

yes they are les. i built it originally "just to have" a un dedicated boiler in the shed for test purposes so i didnt waste any time over it. i wish i had now . it really scrubbed up a treat buts its a bit rough in places. still its just my test boiler but i think it looks good enough to be used on a display till a better one comes along.

Nice work Glenn, should serve you very well as both a test platform and proof of concept when you build the bigger one.

That's a very elegant boiler now.
Shame to fire it.

Shame to fire it. | thats why i upgraded it. so as to keep my other boiler looking good. the poor thing (other boiler) its been fired over thirty times this month testing whistles and valves and engines. to help share the load and provide extra features i thought i would up grade it . the upgrade took three hours. hense "quick"

(water level plug end) . place whistles in the top bushes....see how it goes.... the "whistle bar" of the calliope needs 12 bushes in a row so one question ive thought up?????? to help keep the steam dry and up to pressure is to place a "firebox" under it and perhaps heat with a burner.????? the whistle bar (similar to a boiler) will need to be about 18 inches long. im only working on 20 psi not the 50 psi as the plans indicate. so i beleive some extra help may be needed.?????? boiler both ends??????? at least i can experiment now.

It looks good and solid, Glenn.
A useful piece of equipment, not a shelf queen.
I need to do something similar, compressed air doesn't quite cover it all when testing.

i agree phil. compressed air is a great indicator but STEAM has a mind of its own. its the heat side of things and the expansion of metal . ive heard of many who have put their heart and soul into making engines that run perfect on air and find they wont run on steam.

You could so build one of the PM kits like I did.
You would enjoy it Glenn.

Nice job there!
That is really a useful piece.

How about these, Glenn?

2mm stainless steel! With a mig welder and a steady hand they would make a decent boiler.
