Christ, look at what this mamod loco is pulling
|
tmuir
|
Wow thats impressive.
I could see its been converted to centre buffer, has uprated safety valve and it has either an inline lubricator in the cab like my roundhouse one or that could be a butane cylinder, couldnt tell from the vid.
Either way that runs great.

Amazing, I want that exhaust beat, at the start of the video, isn't it climbing a gradient???
|

Blimey.
That is very very impressive.
Wonder if he has fitted some kind of chuff pipe, it sounds really good.

I counted 22 cars that loco was hauling AND up a gradient if I'm correct. Wow is right.
We need to get that gent to join this forum and tell us what mods he did to accomplish that.

Mine makes that sound when pulling a heavy load and the regulator is open quite a lot, most of that sound comes from the pistons believe it or not
running on gas maybe?

Im not trying to brag but she will pull more when the wheels aren't wobbling. It run so many miles even the bearings on the replacement Ip wheels are getting worn.
|
Chris
|
Welcome.
Please tell more about the loco!
|
PTLRcecil
|
Only glad too.
It was in fact my father who rebuilt the loco out of one of the original Mss locos.
He silver solderd the boiler fitted Ip Enginneering Cylinders wheels and water feed valve. She has a homemade safety valve displacement lubicator and a three wick meths burner with large capacity tank.
We dont know why shes as powerful as she is seeing that other maods of ours have had similar treatment over the past 25 years since mamod released there steam locos I guess we just got lucky.
If theres ant thing else Ill be glad to answer it.
P.S Keep an eye on youtube for another Vid of this engine and other intresting beasties ( including the tram built out of a mamod traction engine)

hello
your locos amazing!!!!!
what mods have you got on it?
looks bloody good in black (black is my yet to be built railways colours)
whats the railway called?

Stands for the Pine Tree Light Railway. On the wagon behind the engine it has SHLR (Sleighton Heathers Light Railway). The original line it and the mamod came from.

Hi, welcome to the forum! I think your setup's gorgeous - love that viaduct, reminds me of the Settle to Carlisle trip....coincidence?
|
PTLRcecil
|
The viaduct is based on chelfam viaduct on the lynton and barnstaple exept in dull size it would be bigger as it has 11 arches instead of chelfams 8.

cant wait to build my garden railway
seeing vids like that makes you want to get out there and do it
can you get some pics of the tram please
|
PTLRcecil
|
The best way to do it is wait till you've got a nice day then just start and as soon as possible get some steam on running on it and you soon get the motivation. I wouldnt worry about scenic details untill you have a main running line down with a passing loop etc.
It worked for me and my father but ive seen other people take it different ways what ever suits you best.
|
steamyjim
|
unfortunaltey i cant start till we have moved the workshop .
but im just thinking i could start one end of th line (the small terminus station) and carry on up till where it would enter the workshop.
atleast it would be something running

i want my railway to be a grotty industrial tramway with heavy industrial buildings containing mamod engines
it appeals to me more than like a countryside feel
|
PTLRcecil

Ive seen that been done before and it looks different but right at the same time. I cant remember what the railway was called but it was a brick works laid on several different tiers and it looked fantastic.

was it Peter Jones Compton Down Railway...
that is one of the best garden railways ive seen
heavy industry, smoke, steam ect
i might be going there soon

Welcome to the forum Cecil. I hope your stay with us is a long and pleasant one. Just loved the viaduct, I went past the Chelfam viaduct when it was under restoration and was very impressive. Despite the fact it was surrounded by scaffolding
|
PTLRcecil

Aye there was a time when chelfam had as much scafalding as the forth rail bridge as to a previous question its ulverston im based in.
|
SillyBilly

Any chance of paying you a visit in the future? As that viaduct is to die for, also you've a nice Locobox Garret, don't think I've see one without ocsilating cylinders before.

I thought the Locobox Garrets only had oscillating cylinders... The new K1 they are releasing has an option of full Walschaerts valve-gear or oscillating cylinders
|
steamyjim
|
the basic locobox garrat has oscilating cylinders wich is called the Darj. whearas the more expensive one has fixed cylinders (the valve gear looks like roundhouse actually) is called the African

To sillybilly yes there is most possibly a chance you can come and see the PTLR when your in cumbria again provided were in. Several weekends we may be at the Bo'ness and kinniel railway firing the shire there.

Is that D49 'Morayshire'?
|

Yep she is I say her cos chances are Ive got her for a week in the summer since 80105's of visiting other line 419's going to be little used in preparation for her centinery and No 1 just rarly gets used.

I see, although of course I for one would love to see Morayshire rather than 80105 hauling trains. I've seen enough BR Standard Tanks for one lifetime I think

Very impressive! It just goes to show what can be done with a well tuned Mamod! I bet you had to be careful the rails were clean and free of oil for that run!

I do like the viaduct too!
Not sure about the worlds most powerful Mamod bit though!

Can we have a shot of the ineterior eg the gearing and how you did it??? Please
Is the engine still on top?
I saw that in Tag Gortons Garden Railways In Focus. It was on the Foxfeilds Railway if my memory serves me right. There also was a realy detailed black Mamod SL1 in the background wich i think was yours aswell.

Aye it was and the black mamod was the mel which also has a fair amount of oomph behind it for an original mamod. As for titan I put in the title on youtube
1 to catch peoples attention
2 Just as a bit of a joke
3 Its the most powerful mamod in the NWAG area of the 16mm asociation
4 Im not being sarcastic but can you put on a vid of yours on youtube. Just curious
|
PTLRcecil
|
Either taht or we couble them together and drag an Accucraft NG16 backwards.
|
Titan
|
Well I won't be drawn on whose is the most powerful, but that performance does seem pretty similar to what I have seen Titan pull (or if you want to be pedantic it was in fact push). I think that that is about the limit of what it could do running at 20 psi, and TBH I have never needed anything better, since I have not got that much rolling stock!!
However, I do have a 40psi safety valve lurking in my tool box, and if I wanted to go further the boiler should be good for a working pressure of 60 psi (it is an aftermarket silver soldered boiler made from brass at least twice as thick as a standard Mamod, and tested when new to 120psi).
But I have no real desire to - apart from anything else I would have to start getting inventive about where I could fit extra ballast weight to stop wheelspin, and things might start to wear out a bit too rapidly!!!
Mind you it does start you wondering what the ultimate limit is !!!
Just out of curiosity, what pressure is that Mamod running at?
|
Titan
|
Don't worry, this is all taken quite lightheartedly!!
And to be fair pulling a train like that your loco must surely be a good contender!! In fact I am rather impressed that there was no wheelspin - do you have a lot of added weight?
As it happens there is already a video of Titan on youtube from when I exhibited at the Lincolnshire Museum steam and oil day, although I did not put it there, and it is not hauling the longest of trains since I was not trying to at the time! And it had a steam leak that needed fixing (I know excuses excuses etc!!)

I'd love Titan, it is probably the best Mamod loco ever

Sounds like a dance out of a grease musical.
Arthur is pulling very little at the moment. Doesn't seem to be getting up to pressure. I think the water top up valve is leaking.
The new loco runs very well (need to decide on a name, it will be either "prefect" or "ford"), but as yet the only mods are a safety valve and meths burner (now fixed after I stripped the thread on it).
|
James
|
LMFAO!!
|
PTLRcecil
|
Im not entirely sure what mine blows off at but as long as she doesnt blow up in my face im quite happy. Just a little trick ive learnt to hold pressure in is to buy mamod traction engine water glasses instead of train ones. with a little bit of adjustment they will fit.

nice stuff there
Is that a De-Winton i spy next to the tram?
Where abouts is the engine in the tram?

Well those lines shown belong to members of our local area group and only the Jenny is my loco. And for the record I didnt build her one of our freinds sold up his railway a while ago. I bought his single fairlie (seen next to the tram in one of the pics) and my freind from college (also into 16mm) bought the Jenny however for finacal reasons he sold it to me on a buy back bases for some time in the future.

yes it is a half built abandoned project de winton from the early 90's and it is for sale. Anyone intrested Il email you some pics.
The engine in the tram has been moved underneath the boiler and the gearbox is underneath that. To get at the engine to take a decent photo I would have to dismantle it and my dad would then catstate me if I didnt put back together right.
|
SillyBilly
|
How mutch is the De Winton?
|
PTLRcecil

Not sure Its my fathers so Ill have to ask him when he gets back from work. All it is is a set of frames wheels connecting rods with a boiler shell and a meths tank Ill get a pic of it.

There you go could prob finish with an osmoter or other device of ocilating nature.
|
SillyBilly

Ther's a lot of work in it and that means I'd have to call on a lot of favours! But also, the standard of work looks excellent. Is the boiler just a tube? I'm not promissing to be over enthusiastic about purchsing it so don't go out of your way with my questions.

I'm guess that De Winton is 32mm, I only run 45mm
