WW2-80s RAF Scampton fuel dumpThis dump is hidden away in amongst farms and fields!
It's piped up to RAF Scampton, home of the Dambusters, the Red Arrows, and all that stuff. It was kept away from the base because if the base was bombed, up goes your fuel!! It's still piped up, although the MOD now rent it to dad's mate for grazing, and we graze our sheep on it It's on standby, so if we go to war or owt, we'll be hoofed off and it will be put back into use!! Apparently my great grandad worked here in the war
Some of the pics are blurry, because there wasn't much light!
Here we go:
The fire station!
The edge of the fence
A more modern gaurdhouse
Fuel tanks buried under ground!
A well with running water
Generators and pumps
Fire alarm!!

Are you sure they haven't changed their minds? It looks a little out of date.

We have somewhere like that along the A27 leaving Chichester for Portsmouth. I suspect it is piped for Tangmere

Jimbo could you do me a favour?
The row of valves on the pipeline look like the ones we used to produce at our factory.
The next time you're there ,could you check the makers name for me?
It will be clearly written on the valve body.
One of the most famous places I've seen our valves was on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California.
|
James

Where abouts are they mate? There were loads of valves
I'll be going every night to check me tups... today I'm off to have a look down them tunnel things

Apart from terrorist activity I can't see Britain being attacked by anyone who doesn't have missile launched nuclear weapons.
So I doubt the old airbases and support facilities would have much to do in that sort of war. Hope your sheep aren't one of the first targets hit.
Russia and China are probably the worst threats at the moment so lets try and keep them friendly.
Chinese defence spending has grown massively in the last few years (over treble what it was 8 years ago). Only slightly worrying.
Do we have any Chinese or Russian members? Surely the Russians produced some toy steam engines before the war (not much comes up on Google though).
|
James
|
I'll try mate!
|
James
|
Russia is a bit wierd IMHO, I can't seem to tell wether they're on our side or not, even in WW2
china... if they built a missile it would probably break after a mile of flight

We need to get James a better camera. Brace yourself against a wall or set the camera on something and use the self timer. I say this as there are pictures that James himself weould like to have in the future and they are blurry. A 1/4-20 screw on the Shepherds Crop would do it too.

It's cos it were dark
I'll go when it's light and they'll all be perfect

No insult intended, if you learn to steady it, even the dark ones can turn out better

Great PIcs james.
There is a lot of history hidden around the world in places like that.
There are a some old bunkers in the hills out side Sydney that are from WW2, to protect Sydney from the West if we got invaded.
If you are going to look in the Tunnels make sure you take a torch and let some one know your going out there, as there can get a lott of nasty Gases built up in places like that, and even more some being that it was a fule dump.

Hey guys
The gate were locked last night, so we had to climb up the bridge and go along the train line. Stupid I know, but it's straight as a die and you can see trains coming miles away. I went and explored the place, and found an overgrown siding with all the track still there. I went along the line, and found a little concrete hut, with the door kicked in, windows smashed, and all grafiti on it. On a small table there was a big round weight, stamped "LNER 40", probably off a signal, and a big signal bracket aswell. It's been there bloody years, so tonight I'll go pick it up, nobody else gives a crap about it!
I'll take loads of pics tonight for you loco loving guys

Actually using your photos it is very clear on Google Earth - try this http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=...253&z=18&t=h&hl=en-GB
Going by the information available on the internet, this fuel depot supplied all the airfields in Lincolnshire in WW2.
Since the days of satellites and Google Earth, etc. locations like this are now harder to keep secret. In fact OS have stopped hiding sensitive sites from their maps as we can see them on Google Earth, or other such services, already.
See here for some examples of LNER signals - http://www.signalbox.org/signals/lne.htm

Thanks Chris!!
Looks like I''ve got the linkage and everything to a "disk shunting signal"

You have way to much luck James can I have some first the patterns now this signal stuff.
and that signal equipment sounds like interesting stuff if you find any of the signal arms or any of the discs let me know as I have been trying to get some but havent had any luck.
|
James

Dad were saying that! With the Marshalls, all the old buildings and stuff I go to round here, this, eeee!
|
James
|
Here's the level crossing.
My great grandad worked in here, controling the points and stuff to the fuel dump, wearing the same pocket watch chain as I am today
|
Lewis
|
oh aye thats how they all should be ! i can just see a steamer going past it
cant be many left like that on the mainline now
|
James
|
See that house thing? It's the old station, and there's a big old shed where they kept goods brought from Gainsborough and Lincoln. My great great grandad had a horse and cart, and he went and collected the fruit and veg there, and delivered it round all the farms and villages, while my great grandad worked the signals.
A bloke dad knows was saying, in the first world war (I think), great great grandad used to deliver him fruit, and when he were a kid, to see him coming up the track were grand - an apple or banana or whatever was a huge treat in them days!

its nice to see a level crossing with gates nowadays instead of barriers which idiots just drive around then get hit and sue the railway. cant do that with gates though can ya
could do with a spot of paint though

There's not that many left in active use. This one's not going anywhere as it's a listed building now: http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk...ult.aspx?id=197088&mode=quick
(So is the station building James)
|
pauly

Yes but are the gates what I cant understand is why are they replacing them I cant really see any advantages that the barriers might have.
|
James
|
Naaa it ain't Chris, that's Torksey
This siding... loads of track has been taken up and it's THICK with trees
Them gates have been smashed off sooooo many times!

If they have been smashed off by cars so many times and have survived like they have that just proves their sturdiness

You do not need a railway employee to operate the automatic barrier crossings, thus saving the costs of providing the said employee(s) plus suitable working quarters (i.e. a signal box or level crossing box, etc.).
See here for more on level crossings - http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/2292.aspx#ahb

but the gate crossings are also automatic now so they swing open by themselves you can see this in James 3rd pic
|
James
|
No lad there's a bloke opening the gates!
And they ain't the original gates
|
pauly
|
oh its just Iv seen some that are automatic and its a shame they aren't original if barriers are so superior why replace the gates at all when they get smashed up.
and thanks for correcting me

Wow that looks like a real nice Interlocking Tower, I love the trim on the building, back when a little effort went into things just to make them look nice.

If you read through the link I provided, it only mentions Manually controlled gate
Automatic crossings are either half barrier or just flashing lights, but no gates.

Should I post me pics? I don't want to get nicked for posting them and half inching that signal
Can't post them ATM anyway, at school!
