Yay - I have a Mamod!Yesterday after work I picked up a package containing my first Mamod - a SE2-a bought for the princly sum of $55.00 CDN. (somewhere about $53.00 US)
i got it home unwrapped, unwrapped, unwraped - the seller was VERY good about packing - and found this...
ALLRIGHT!!!!
but
when i turn it upside down, it's half full of water... gak.
and when drained, there is something rattling around in the boiler... hmmmm
and, when I ty to take off the whistle, it just spins round and round and round... so I figure that the only way to grab the whistle threads is from inside the boiler, so away I go and do this...
and then sweat off the boiler end, and find a pebble in the boiler, (that's what was rattling - this is the second engine in a row I've bought with something foreign inside the boiler - go figure) grab the whistle threads with the needle nosed visegrips, finally remove the (siezed up) whistle, resolder the threads, tin the cap, replace the cap, free up the whistle, resolder the steam line, clean up the base, put the whole thing back together... all before 10:00!
So I finally wind up with THIS...
And am I a happy camper - this thing FLYS!!! Foreward, reverse, driving a couple Meccano builds (I'll post a couple of vids in the Meccano area..)
I LOVE this little engine - I think I need more...

Nice job, it usually takes me weeks to get any engine repaired, but having a six month old baby in the house doesn't help.
Water left in the boiler is annoying but happens a lot.
I personally have found 2 inch nails, matches and a wood screw inside the boilers of my engines before. Don't know what it is with people dropping stuff into the boiler.

Yeah, I just dosn't make sense - the last purchase I made on eBay was a Fleishmann 124 - it came with a little verticle engine with several parts missing. Inside the Fleishmann boiler - the crankshaft belonging to the verticle - I had the mental image of some little boy coming to the realisation that he was never going to fire up the little engne again. AAAaahhhhh crappppp....
A one month old? Congratulations! I remember those days - barely - sleep deprivation, every routine you thought you had shattered... enjoy!

A nice buy, that SE2A has come up very well. The problem with stuck safety valves and whistles etc usually stems from people leaving them screwed up tight all the time. I always leave my SV and water level plug in the chimney and make sure the the whistle is loose in the thead. It saves having to unsolder the end cap,
Cheers

It sure looks nice now. I bought a Jensen 25 on Ebay and the thing came with the boiler filled to the top! I bet he paid a dollar extra just to ship water!
You polished it up nice too.

Dave, you sure cleaned and fixed that one fast...brave guy to tackle a boiler end cap removal so soon after receiving. Glad it all turned out well and runs well too...doesn't get much better than that!!!
cheers,
Roger

You make it sound so trivial and routine to knock the boiler apart
I got a cheap little SE2a too. Not nearly as nice as yours. It's got a few gotchas, but is still a fun little thing.
I've got a bid in on an S.E.3 now. Hopefully in 3 days it'll be mine

I love my SE3.
I've got an early one with old type whistle and extra long burner.
Part of its charm is how the flames wrap around the whole boiler.

The days of picking SE3's up for 20 quid are sadly long gone
The really early ones have the solid cylinders which were the first made
It's the best Mamod ever made though, no question!
