your opinion please

hi guys i would like your opinion on the following

sadly my wife and i have now parted company and for financial reasons i may have to sell some of my collection, i have thought very hard about this and at this moment in time have decided that it may be a good idea to sell off all my stationarys engines but hang onto anything mobile related, this way i'm still keeping my hands on steam as it were.

as some of you are aware i do own a varied collection of stationarys some of which i'm sure would fetch a lot on ebay however i do feel obliged to offer them to forum members first, i know that if i went down the ebay route i would probally get more for them especially my bowmans etc.

as i said at the moment it is something i'm thinking about and i have not yet come to a 100% decsion, but having said that if i do decide to sell it will only be stationarys and not mobiles.

for those of you that have not seen my collection here is my website www.mini-steam.co.uk

your opinions please guys.............. thanx

As you know I was in this position a few months back. There are better ways to make money and im sure you could find them. Selling off a collection is only a short term solution, it may pay the bills one month but what about the next?

Thats just advice I was given and took in to account in my situation but I hope that you come to your own conclusion and things sort them selves out.

I'd say, if your reasons for selling are financial, then go for whatever will give you the best return which, as you say, is probably eBay.
johnreid

I agree with what was said previously, the financial solution is only temporary as once an engine is sold, it is gone, I might suggest that you consider keeping some of your stationary engines.
That being said. Whichever you decide to sell, announce the Ebay listing in the Ebay section here and sell on Ebay as you need the money. If there is an item that a forum member badly wants, you might do a completed item search on Ebay and offer that item for the going price that is fetched on Ebay.

Apart from that , I am sorry to hear of your troubles as I also know you dearly love your family, children make such an occurrence twice as difficult.

eBay will be the way to go to maximise your return. You must put yourself first in such a difficult situation.
Nick

You can always post them on the forum at the price you hope to get for them on ebay. I would be willing to pay that little extra knowing it is going to a friend and it's helping him out. This would also save you the ebay fees.

Then, if any of them do not sell, you can list them on ebay.
Sandman

First of all may I just say how very sorry I am to hear how things are for you at the moment , Jay.

To me, this is one of those times that you have to think of yourself first.

There is no obligation to give your fellow members first chance in these circumstances, because we all want the very best for you.

I think Roly got it right mate. Put them on ebay, and if we want them, we'll bid. Prices seem to be good at the moment, and your collection will do well I'm sure.

All the luck in the world, mate, whatever you decide.
MooseMan

Hi Jay, so sorry to hear that mate!

I'm with the others - if you need to maximise revenue, sell them on eBay. However, try and keep a few treasured ones.
Titan

As it happens, I am in a similar position. Fortunately as I do not have a large collection, I will be able to avoid selling anything, but sadly Jay might not have a choice, depending on the settlement. If I am to keep the house I will have to give the ex cash equivalent to half the equity. That  equals a lot of money which I do not have!I think I may just about be able to raise it but there will be lean times ahead for some time - perhaps I am not the only one glad house prices have gone down recently!!!
johnreid

Not for the same reasons, but poverty is one thing I am used to. Do your best to keep the spirits up and hopefully the Steam hobby can be an avenue of escape from you daily woes.

Jay I think you already know the answer, you have to look out for you and yours first.

While it is admireable that, in your difficult circumstances, you feel it necesary to consider offering your collection to the Forum first; your personal obligations have first priority. Sure, in the Forum there exists an ethos of generosity that you might feel a desire to extend but we could hardly feel generous if we used that ethos to obligate you.

If you put your collection on Ebay the members here will still have an opportunity to bid. There may even be an opportunity for you to offer particular items, that you wish to put a BIN price on, to the Forum  first (without discount) but you should not feel any obligation to do so.

I wish you and your family well and hope that you can attain the best resolution to your circumstances with as little pain and as much dignity as possible

Cheers, Lozza.

Sorry to hear of your troubles and a great shame that you may need to let go of some of your wonderful collection.
TE1DRIVER

Jay, sorry to hear of your situation, all i can say is you have to do what is best for you financially and otherwise. Best of luck with it all mate.
Jay_Minor

hi guys and big thank you to you all for responding and your nice messages
as i said i'm not sure what to do yet or what i would need to sell
but you can be rest assured that i will keep you all informed in due course.

once again thanks and i'm proud to be a member of such a great forum
Lozza1

Well, It's a Forum of people like you Jay
marc robson

Hi jay     as like everyone has said  you must do what is best for you and you only.  Best of luck in what ever you decide   keep smiling
Griffin

Jay, so sorry to hear of your circumstance.  I too am with the others, if you need to sell do what is best to maximise the sale price.

Don't be hasty in any decision of selling of your collection though, but if you do decide to sell keep your favourite ones.  You can then use these as a focus point, and this will take your mind off the troubled times ahead.

Titan, sorry to hear that you too have a similar circumstance.
Chris

Jay, sorry to hear about your situation.  As others have said you need to think of yourself.  If you need to sell make sure you get the best price you can.

Also as others have said selling things gets you money for the short term, but then what?

If you do sell stick them on ebay, post the links here, and we all have a chance of bidding.
syrtismajor

So sorry to hear of your circumstances Jay, and wish you all the best for whatever the future holds.
It'll be a shame to see off some of your engines off but I'm sure that you'll be able to buy some back and some even better ones before too long
Les

Sorry to hear of your circumstances Jay, to maximise your best return put them on e-bay but please post a link here so we know what is happening, I just hope it doesn't come to that though.
Wallace

Very sorry to hear it Jay.
verithingeoff

Sad time Jay, been there and done it so I know how you feel.....there is light at the end of the tunnel, and it ain't a train headlamp. Keep your spirits up, I'm sure, that we all here on the forum, will offer all the support we can...............e bay if you must, but keep us informed.........All the best mate---
Stilldrillin

So very sorry to hear of your problems Jay.

Good luck to you.....
kevininasia

I'm very sorry to hear that Jay.

Like the rest said, sell them on ebay instead of offering them to us at a discount. Personally, if you have something that I really want, i will bid on it anyway, and I would be quite happy to bid higher, knowing that a) the money is going to a forum member in need, and b) the engine came from a forum member who knew how to treat engines. And down the road one day, if you ever want to buy it back, it's yours.

Take care Jay - we're all wishing the best for you.
IndianaRog

Jay, it's been said repeatedly in the last 24 hours, but I too wanted to extend my sympathies over the breakup and hope it does not have to extend to the collection.

By all means, sell on eBay for best price...we are big boys, if we want something badly enough we ought to pay the going price.  Just do us a favor and give us a head's up if one or more pieces is going to be listed on eBay so we don't miss them.

Personally I hope you find other ways to raise the needed funds, selling off ones collectibles hurts.
