Your specialist subject is...No, I'm not going on Mastermind! Just sorting through my railway books (all 91 of them!) I wondered whether any of the other members have a specialist subject or hobby they have apart from Toy Steam.
Mine is pretty obvious (railways!)

Just think of the Steam engines you could buy if you were growing and selling the funny type
Restoring Cars can cost a bit. I also was into photography for a long time, went to school for it. And I once built about 80% of an airplane Neuport 11 replica.

VW's ate up a few of my disposable dollars in the past. Mine was running 98MM pistons with a fairly radical cam for strong low end torque. Polished and ported heads were fitted with stainless valves and dual two barrel Cadrone carbs. Tie all that to a super ridged pipe frame rail buggy and you had a ride that could sometimes scare you white knuckled. Top end was only about 80 mph, but you got there fast...LOL
You could draw more than a few stares when both front wheels were airborne for most of two gears. We drove them on the dirt fire roads in the mountainous area where the movie Deliverance was filmed.

Very cool Steve,
Sounds cool and although I've seen some 2+ liter and Type IV monsters on the road, speed just ain't my thing. I feel like I am one stage above a motorcycle as is when I am in the Bug. Going faster would scare the heck out of me. 98MM is insane
I bought my first Beetle four years ago and have finally got it running correctly. As with most hobbies these things seem to multiply so I now have a 1971 Fastback in the backyard and a 1974 Sun Bug that I snatched from the hands of butchers. They cut the rear 'forks' so I can't use the pan and the plan now is to restore the body and put it on my 1973 Super because I always wanted a sunroof.
Well my Cadillac crapped out me on yesterday so until I fix it the 1973 Super Beetle is my main transport, should be fun!
And gosh darn it if my first response to this thread didn't 'remind' me of my other hobbies. I just spent a considerable amount on eBay acquiring a few vintage portable computer gems. The cool thing is it seems like the market has slowed down as I was able to get some things at a fraction of what they cost a few years ago. Though there always seems to be that person who has that 1983 PC on eBay for the 1983 price.

I only have time for one hobby at a time.
Computer tech would be next. I could say musketry, but I've not burnt powder in 2 years (range is getting good value from my dues).
Used to build plastic models, 1/48 AC, and some 1/35Armour towards the end. Always loved doing the weathering, especially on tanks. Got rid of all my unbuilt kits other than a few stragglers and some high priced ones that I refuse to sell for 5 cents on the dollar... Might build them some day too.
Did a bit of writing on and off, but nothing I'd show to anyone who knew me personally, save one or two close friends.
Nothing fancy. I'm an utterly boring fellow. Grumpy to some, weird to others, heating pad to my dog.

I've got a few other hobbies:
- cycling
- American cars (although my own one will soon have to go )
- Geocaching, a worldwide GPS game, read more about it on www.geocaching.com , but be warned that it's very addictive. (I've done this since january 2003 and in the summer months there aren't much weekends that go without it.
- Hard rock / metal concerts (I bet you didn't see that one comming )
- fireworks
- real size steam trains

Mark, the Black Powder bit is of an interesting bit of trivia, the closest community to me is Friendship Indiana where they hold the Championships for Muzzle Loaders. It is quite a big deal around here, the National Headquarters for the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association is at Friendship.
The town is about pop 80 but when the Shoots are going on, the population is more like 80000

Was a concert piano technician in a former time. Met many big names in the performing arts.
Theremins (google)
Model T Fords (had one and drove it as sole transportation for years)

Oh I am interested in clockwork again: what makes Jimmy tick?

... exactly, Erik! They fly up to about 400-500 metres (with one stage), and come down (if all goes well) via a tiny parachute.

I remember as a kid, playing with Estes Rockets. They had a parachute that worked sometimes and it was often very difficult to find it once it landed. Never got as advanced a multiple Stages though.

... a few years back I made a model of the V1 buzz bomb (Fieseler Fi103), all complete with a starting ramp like a ski jump. Electric start! Swwwiiiiisch, the thing hurtles down the jump, flies into the air, topples and summer saults, smashes into the ground, rocket "engine" still burning, and swishes along in the grass like a firy snake with smoking hiccups.
I still have the thing; it resides hanging from the ceiling, slowly collecting layers of dust. The second pix is a kind of scene with it I shot with my ol' Olympus back in 1996:

THEREMINS!
You're a man of hidden talents Reid! I've got a little pocket Theremin myself, and at work we have a couple of big ones, made by Jake Rothman. Can you actually play the things?
Claim to fame: I met Leon Theremin (or Lev Termen, as he called himself then), together with Bob Moog, at a convention in 1991 - he was one of the keynote speakers- so was I!

... Erik, here you go! It's a pix of my V2 rocket. The backdrop is just cardboard with felt pen marked tree silhouettes. The tank is a "Hetzer", the soldier is - not quite fitting - a Russian officer made of pewter. The launch "pad" is the top of a spray paint can. The snow is - flour. B/W macro done with my old Olympus OM1, 1998.
