would a blog, like a wordpress one,  be a reasonable platform to show a collection. could it be linked up to a webring?

Sorry don't know much about blogs but if you want it on the webring there are only 2 requirements.
1) its about toy or model steam which I'm guessing it would be.  
2) You have the ability to put either javascript or html in the page yourself so you can add the webring panel which again I couldn't answer about that site.

Just if you sign up to the web ring it won't get activated until I get back to Australia and back on my home PC which will be July.

The only thing about Blogs is that they need to be frequently updated, I for one would enjoy reading yours, please send us a link of you decide to go forward.
