It's already some time ago that I bought my flatbase minor 2. Today I finaly made some progress with cleaning it up.

when I got it, It looked like this:

I decided to keep this engine 100% original, so no repainting was required. The paintwork was looking a bit dull, so I searched for something to polish it. I found a can of "Commandant 5" car polish, and gave it a trie.
It worked very well, after a few minites of polishing, the paint was looking a lot better.

I think however that you shouldn't do this too often, because my towel turned orange.

It's not yet finished, but it now looks like this:

Some small parts like the cylinder, piston and shaft are goint into the vinegar and salt for the night.

Does look good Erik!

You've made the right decision to keep it original anyway

That brass flywheel will polish up a treat

Takes me about an hour to polish the wheels, might be slow but it doesn't half work and look good!

Only 2 pics working for me at the mo. Before and one of it with flywheel off.

Looking good though Erik. Real good.

That's the problem with polishing, it always takes paint. Well with a car polish anyway.

Porbably worth doing once for a clean up, then linseed oil it.

Haven't heard of this Fellas, how much salt? How much vinegar? How long do I soak the parts for?

Get a mug, fill the mug with vinegar as much as you need to fuly soak the parts. You can buy a massive bottle of vinegar from the co-op for 89p . Put a LOT of salt in till the vinegar turns light brown, then leave in for about an hour and it does the trick!

Happy days. Does this only work on brass? If I do my SR1 boiler, does it matter if any of the mix gets inside?

Well it could potentially ruin the threads so don't let the threads soak in the vinegar its ok if it touches it though just not soaking for a long period of time.
