K4 waiting to depart eastbound from Edinburgh Waverley, via the Edinburgh Suburban Circle to the Bridge.
Crossing the Bridge northbound, with the Forth Road Bridge far left.
Approaching Cowdenbeath from the east.
Approaching cutting just south of Jamestown, with towers of Forth Road Bridge ahead.
Crossing the Bridge southbound.
The magnificent Bridge, currently being repainted with North Sea Oil rig developed paint, which should last 20 years plus.
And the K4 on the 2nd tour northbound.
At least I can now start my new job with a big steam injection.
Thanks for looking. |

| Quote: | | "Painting the Forth Bridge" is a colloquial term for a never-ending task (a modern rendering of the myth of Sisyphus), coined on the erroneous belief that, at one time in the history of the bridge, repainting was required and commenced immediately upon completion of the previous repaint. According to a 2004 New Civil Engineer report on contemporary maintenance, such a practice never existed, although under British Rail management, and before, the bridge had a permanent maintenance crew. |

Interesting Chris, but still, surely at some point it must have been the case, do these phrases get made up, theres usually some truth in most of these old phrases?
Either way it is a great saying, used widely, so hopefully it wont go with new technology |

As you say, it is a popular phrase used by many people, including many Scots like myself, but it has been proven to be untrue.
Probably get dropped for 'Political Correctness' (I hate that saying) once the current painting is completed.
There will be much more to talk about as the adjacent Forth Road Bridge will be close to its terminal failure by then. Current estimates give possibly 2013 for the failure of enough cables to make it unsafe, and the replacement bridge will not be finished until 2016. But of course with our current record of bridges not working (London) or a cable failing (Glasgow), then I would not put a bet on that date either. _________________ Chris Cairns.

New phrase coming up- its like mending the Forth road bridge meaning itll never happen
Is the highways under the command of devolved Scotland, or Uk highways agency i wonder.
The new Severn Bridge and old Severn bridge are both still going together, but i suspect that there were more pressing political pressures to maintain the link between South West England and South Wales which caused the second crossing to be built.
lot of people take the Chepstow to Gloucester/ Forest road to Wales to avoid the bridge fees- free to get back from Wales to England. |

| Quote: | | The Severn Bridge - During its 40th year of operation, the bridge was inspected to check for corrosion of the suspension cables. According to the Highways Agency,[6] the inspection concluded that the bridge needed restrictions on heavy goods vehicles.[7] Such vehicles are now restricted to one lane on the bridge, with weight restriction signs in place. A system of installing a rubber casing on the cables with dry air circulation is to be used on the Forth Road Bridge and a similar system may be implemented on the Severn Bridge, in a move to halt the progress of the corrosion. |
I believe that the Forth Estuary Transport Authority (FETA), the organisation responsible for maintaining and operating the Forth Road Bridge in Scotland, have the authority to restrict use/close the bridge.
| Quote: | | The Highways Agency is responsible for managing, maintaining and improving the strategic road network in England - Trunk roads and motorways in Scotland are the responsibility of Transport Scotland |
