Yes you got a good price!

If you did know all this before hand, would you have bought it? .

One of my first SE2's had a loose chimney!

I'd have to say yes. I wanted a SE2, it was boxed, and it was kinda cheap

Base looked a little too black in picture. Although I didn't even think I consider it'd need a respray

Cylinder/manifold was expected too

The only thing I didn't expect is union nut boss turning.

After your post re the steam pipe, it's quite possible this thing was still in running order. When I saw it I thought "why is the steam pipe not attached. But now realise it can happen.

It's all good learnig exp, and should I re-spray, it's a nice little project.

I'll put pics up as i go.

My previous message should have said "I'll see how paint comes up with a polish tomorrow evening".

Can't really do anything with the flywheel spokes though. Hard to polish I think.

We'll see
Apart from my MEC1, this is my first proper resto

So far Success.

I wasn't going to start till tomorrow, but couldn't help it.

I tried heating loose union nut boss from outside of boiler, to melt existing solder. It worked. I have since tightened and loosened union nut many times, by hand, to test, and it seems all good

So I started on cylinder. Heated up to burn off glue. Glue softened enough to take it apart, but didn't burn off. When it cooled, it went rock hard.
So I spent 45mins heating slightly, allowing to cool till I could just barely handle, then scraped off glue. Repeated process about 5 times.

The mating surfaces have been scratched. Not sure if they are factory like that, or gluer did it. Either way, it'll make for good solder surface. Pics make it look worse, and it'll be hidden anyway.

The only sign of exisiting solder is the darker colour near steam port and other end in cylinder, and dark area near steam port on the manifold bit.
I will try solder it all along mating face

The surfaces have been roughened to aid soldering.

Thanks Mike.

I wasn't sure if it was roughened at factory, as there is virtually no solder there.
I suppose the person who glued it may have taken solder off, or it had little solder from factory, explaining the repair

Yes I was going to say they were purposly rough . As long as you line those holes back up correctly it should be straight forward.

Some thin solder will help, and you may need to clean it up a little afterwards. The only cylinder I ever soldered was a loco one, but they come apart the same anyway

The soldering is done.
A small nail with some vaseline aided in holding cylinder together for soldering.
Just need to polish it now. Note, I didn't put those marks in cylinder

Steam pipe was tinned as MM suggested. Soldered in, and then a little extra solder added to outside

Tried a buffing compund (similar to t-cut) on base.
Came up a little better, but I realised blackness is on bottom too, lining up with blackness on top. So it's had some real severe heat.

For the life of me, I could not get steam pipe to stay in boiler with union nut, and no flange on end of pipe. Stuffed if I know how it does it. I just didn't seem to have enough pipe to push far enough into boiler. I think 5psi would blow it out. So I soldered it in too. Union nut is now just for show. At least it won't leak.

Not sure what to do with re-spray. I'm going to put it all back together and steam tomorrow. After I see how it runs I'll decide then.
Sorta thinking to keep it as is. The bad paint loss at back of base is a little worry in regard to future rust areas.

The pipes had a rubber seal all the way around the steam pipes that perished. Admittidly, they are a bad design.

Very impressed with the solder job on that pipe at the engine block Wallace! a very neat job, and they are not easy to get like that

I look forward to the finished result, your cracking on with it anyway

Cheers mate.

I've heard mentions here of o-rings for helping seal the steam pipe, but don't think I would have one that would have been really tight around the pipe, that would act as a lip for union nut to hold down.

I nearly reached for my SE1 to look at what was under the union nut, but decided to let sleeping dogs lie

Heated and scraped the old solder of, then finished off with a sharp knife.
The cylinder was easy too. Just tinned the cradle part. Let cool, heated up again, sat on cylinder, more heat, and done. All worrying for nothing

Test time tomorrow

Hardest part is now what to do with base. Firebox is actually quite good, just normal scorching.
