Well, I did set myself up for that, didn't I?
For the record, and then back on topic please:
| Quote: | | The operating principle underlying the theremin is called heterodyning, mixing two signals of different frequencies and extracting the difference. This effect is produced by the pitch circuit that uses two radio-frequency oscillators, one fixed and one variable. When a player moves his hands near the pitch antenna, it changes the speed of the variable oscillator, and the difference between the two creates the musical note. |

And the inventor of the Theremin - Leon Theremin also worked for the KGB and invented listening devices for spying on the Americans during the cold war!
Sneaky! |

... that instrument is fascinating!
I've sent Reid al letter. I wrote, that it would be fine if he could kinda sign off, should his interests have moved on, and that we're a bunch of chums who just hate loose ends. And that we'd like to know if he's okay.
And that I (we!) miss him. His enthusiasm, his skill, his ideas ... his gdf D21 ...
Pray, tell us, Reid: How is the war? We're with you all the way ... _________________ Says Tom

I finally succumbed and called Reid today. I got an anonymous answering machine, and left a long and detailed message with all my
contact information.
Waiting for a reply.
It would seem to me, particularly for those of us in remote locations that it may be appropriate to set up an ICE system. (In Case of Emergency).
I would suggest sharing your personal contact info with another trusted forum member. Thus, in the event anything like this happens again, we would rapidly be able to reassure ourselves that everything was alright. _________________ Richard

Brilliant idea - this forum has grown to much more than just a forum, it's rapidly becoming a social support network as well - nothing wrong with that! _________________ Sight to the blind

Be very careful about sending people persoanal information, it could be open to abuse, we have a lot of young members here. _________________ www.mfsteam.com the home of the MFtwin and replacement spares for Bowman, Cyldon and Mamod Steam Engines

That is why one would choose someone they trust. I know that over a dozen forum members have my mailing address and at least two have my phone number. So much of this information is available on the Net, as far as that goes, a good old fashioned Phone Book has the info too. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

Yes its a good idea but as MF says do think about who you give your info to, especially our younger members.
Not that I think we have anyone on this forum to be worried about but better to err on the side of caution. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Its a sad world but I am speaking from experience when I say you never know what goes on at the other end of a keyboard
Please note I am not pointing fingers I just think people should be careful. _________________ www.mfsteam.com the home of the MFtwin and replacement spares for Bowman, Cyldon and Mamod Steam Engines

If I may interject briefly.
I agree with all the above comments. I had primarily seen this as a system to be used by the older members of the forum who live in more remote locations.
I doubt it would be of much value to the UK membership a lot of whom know each other personally already.
Nor would I advocate that, under any circumstances, such information be published on the public part of the forum.
For the several reasons stated by others this would probably not apply to any of the younger members.
The situation with Reid at present led me to suggest the idea. Whilst it may be that he has just decide to abandon the forum, the total lack of any information has many members genuinely concerned.
I also realized that If I was to disappear suddenly there is no way anyone on this forum would ever find out what happened. Few know my last name. No one has my physical address. My home phone number is unlisted. No one knows the name of my business. I am the only person with access to my P.O. Box, my wife has her own. Dead Ends everywhere.
Assuming anyone was concerned. _________________ Richard

MM--- it always gives me the equally crawling creepies to see Freddy Mercury always "pooching" his lips towards us! from your avator! I almost loaded the Hasslehoff avatar with the Hoffster holding the two puppies and twinkling his eyes !! in rebuttle- but it made my wife cringe toooo much _________________ regards,
