Last summer I went on a trip to see the Normany beaches and some of the museums, the cemeteries in Caen and the musee des blindes in samuar.
I was using sat nav and driving through some amazing rural french villages that hadn't changed one bit since 1944. I'm sure some of the chimney pots were still missing from stray shell fire and the rustic stone walls must have been able to tell some stories.
The villages and countryside was all very pretty, along one lane was a small military cemetery, it was beautifully kept, with the headstones in rows, planted with lavendar and wild flowers. The grass was beautifully cut and edged and the headstones were tastefully carved from a sand coloured stone. Allied and Axis soldiers lied alongside eachother. It was very peacefull and very touching. The fact that it was remote, quiet, far away from anywhere and people, in the middle of farmland on such a idylic day too.
Some graves were just of unknown soldiers, some simply marked "eine deutsche soldat"
To me those simple graves and the unknown histories of those fallen men are the most profound stories and really brings across their bravery and the inhumanity of it all. |

All commonwealth war graves are looked after by the poorly funded Commonwealth War Graves Commission. They do a fantastic job looking after all these sites, I dont know how many there are but they run into hundreds, many of them sited in remote locations. They are all beautifully kept as are the German sites. The 1st World War German graves are solum places, many of them are very dark with mass graves. Have a look at there web site
http://www.cwgc.org/
They have a search facility to find either graves or memorials of fallen soldiers.
We must also pause and remember not only the Allied soldiers but the Germans and their Allies. _________________ www.mfsteam.com the home of the MFtwin and replacement spares for Bowman, Cyldon and Mamod Steam Engines

Yes - Lots of photos! I'll upload some of them to picasa. I have some friends in France, near Paris, their family put us up for a week and it was glorious! A nice house in a small French rural village, with cows for neighbours! The family were so welcoming too - nice company, great food, even better wine, 10 miles from Paris and loads of museums and tanks too! |

My Dad was born in Shanghai China, 1939. Then at the age of 3, in 1942, he and my grandparents were put in to Santo Thomas Internment camp in the Phillipines until 1946. His father was in a different part of the camp, cause they seperated women and children from the men. I still have the newspaper clipping with him sitting on his Dad's shoulders when they were let out. My Grandmother (who is now 98 ) does not talk about it much. When that movie "Empire of the Sun" (Christian Bale's first role) came out in the 80's, I went to see it with my Father, partway in to it, he had to leave. He was in tears, It was SO inaccurate. He said the Japanese were NOT nice. The movie should never have been made.
On my Mom's side of the family, almost the whole family was wiped out by the Nazis. I guess I have a bit of a connection myself.
So I wholly agree with your moment of none posting.
Lest we remember those who died so that we may all live in the world we do today.
God bless. _________________ Keep Creativity Alive! |

My Father served in the Pacific Theater in WWII, and serviced a particular famous B29 prior to an important mission. A good friend of the family was highly decorated from the Battle of the Bulge. There was a lot of sacrifice for so many during WWII. Remember though that although ruled by such a terrible tyrant that most Germans were just ordinary people that were born in the wrong place at the wrong time. I hope that no offense is taken by the German members of the forum. We should all hope that important lessons were learned and such an event never needs to happen again.
I think that so many of us have relatives or friends that suffered and sacrificed in WWII and sadly so many WWII vets are passing away, a generation of people that were willing to give their all for the safety of generations to come. _________________ Your life is an occasion...Rise to it |

A prayer said for all those that war takes and touches.. on all sides. A thanks given for the sacrifice so less in the future will never have to suffer such loss. _________________ regards,
