We must remember all those who lost their lives and those that were effected by conflict.
The vast majority of soldiers on both sides were just doing their job, look at the British, we shot our own troops during the 1st war.
We must not think of the Germans as the enemy and ignore their sacrifice.

I agree, but think that  D day was a very poignant moment for many countrymen around the world- I think huge numbers of US Canadians Anzacs died that day too. As well of course as Europeans and other nationalities.

Nov 11th is also a special time, but I would be quite happy for 5 mins of contemplation in a busy world in June and November- dont think its a pro or anti any country gesture is it really

Great stories guys.

My mate from school has a Stuart tank, that his dad has taken over to Normandy for a re-inactment.

We shouldn't just remember Operation Overlord, but remember the whole war, AND world war 1. Thousands of people died for the freedom we enjoy today and I feel that most young people just don't care now a days.

Most of the German's DIDN'T follow the Nazis, but had no choice other than to do so.

Truth is most of them are extremely embarrased about the war!

I could NOT see today's youth doing what they did.

We shall never forget guys!

Thanks very much!

Looks so nice for such a horrible place.

If I went there, round the cemetrys and that, I'll admit that the senses of being there and seeing all them graves and that, I'd end up rate upset

Nice thread James.

I am a fifth generation American of  German descendent, the family had to change their last name during the first and second world war, due to loyalty questions, and the like. My father and uncle both served in WW2, with my uncle losing his life in a B-24 crash in Guam.

Seventeen years ago (1991), I visited Arlington, where the war dead from the Civil War to present are buried. It made a deep impact on me, I was there for just over three hours, still can see the group of Japanese tourist around the JFK's gravesite, finding the tomb of President William H. Taft, and so many white crosses.

Anyway, glad to see this thread, very nice.

I'm apsoloutely facsinated by the 2 world wars, I think that we MUST learn as much as we can from the survivors from all sides before it's too late.

I am also of a family that has been in the states since 1680 or so.  Second son of franco-prussian royalty.  I am almost ashamed to admit that Bonnie prince Charlie is one of my ancestors.
My original family name is VonKronmuller (not totally sure that is the exact spelling).

I was at Gettysburg last year, and found that one of my ancestors is on one of the memorials!!    J. Hobart Ward.  I have his dress sword hanging on my mantle right behind me.

I knew that he (his first name was Judson), and a younger member, Franklin Pierce Mapes, fought in the Civil War.  For the north of course, I come from a long line of new england yankees. My family has a really rich history, and have fought in all the major wars.  Lost a few cousins in vietnam as well.
The unfortunate part is, that I have no contact with most of the family, cause I don't like them much!!!
I want to move south,  Carolinas most likely.  I do not like the cold.

My grandpa was in WWII, he came out alive. My dad almost went to Nam, but some how he didnt have to. I wish I could have met my grandpa "snooks" as they called him. He got lots of war medals, but damn cancer.
