Looks a lot like my old Vauxhall Nova   (GM produced car).

Things are much more complicated under the bonnet nowadays with the air con, fuel injection, power steering etc. etc.

A good first car there MM.

I had just the same (although mine was an earlier MkI) a 950cc Popular Plus (wow not just a Popular then ) with a Kent CrossFlow Engine, bought from a one lady owner.  It was all I needed (and could afford) at age 17

My 91 Volvo 740 turbo has 239000 miles.  Just had it inspected yesterday.  Remarkable that they get 175HP out of a 2.3L turbo engine.  Your 950cc ford makes sense where you are, you pay a LOT more for fuel!  My Oldsmobile has 5.1 Liter engine, 4bbl carb.  Weighs about 5000Lbs.  I put 1200 miles on it last year.  Its an 83, and has only 120K on it.
This year I will be able to antique plates on it!  Save me a bundle on the insurance.  She is a driveway queen for sure!

later all!!

It's a great idea to have an old simple car as your first one.  It teaches you how to do basic maintenance (a lost art) and how to drive properly (no driver aids and in the case of my 1980 Mini I had - no brakes).  You also have to know how to use a choke in the case of this Fiesta!  Chokes weren't fitted to anything since the catalyst laws came in the UK on 1st January 1993, which demanded a little box of tricks did the work instead.

The huge likelyhood that you'll prang it is another good reason not to spend thousands on something new.

I would leave it standard too: resist the temptation to turn it into a mobile backwards baseball-cap.

I like the Mk1 Fiestas they have a bit more character about them. Ive seen a blue one, 950cc done 41k for £450 quid, prob is, its 200 miles away somewhere

regarding chokes I sent it to a mecanic to get the brakes balanced and he forgot it had a manual choke

Someone loved her before me anyway a little old lady apparently. Bought it new and didn't skip on the high spec dash either

I'm not modding it in any way, keeping it original and when she's ready to go I either sell to this bloke that keeps pestering me for it or give it to the coventry car museaum (if they want it) they have worse in there

Rust is taken care of by a tin or 6 of waxoyl

Just got to add thanks to Wallace for all the help he's given me over the past year or two
