Looks like this will be the 2nd Virtual Steam Rally

No mate. This will be the first global steam rally. Unique to this forum and entirely down to Steve_S and his great idea.

We intend to make this a real chance for our world wide members to get at least a taste of a real steam rally.

Make no mistake, this will not be a handful of people indulging in a mutual backslapping exercise. Nor will it be used to slight or slur others like some places I could mention.

This will be about a weekend of pure fun, chat and a celebration of this forums global status.

Meanwhile, keep those ideas coming.

We will be starting the threads asking for ideas on the event name and the proposed dates very soon.

I've got so many projects on the go I'm looking forward to the date being set so I can give myself a dead line to work to have them ready for the event.

I've just had an idea.
How about we set up a voluntary donation box where people can via paypal put in what ever they want and then with that money we buy an engine (new or secondhand) to be a kind of a door prize for the event with a ticket going into the hat so each video (limit one ticket per engine) or photo right up on an engine and at the end of the event we draw out a name with the winner getting the engine.
If we had enough cash left over after the purchase postage to UK could be free and if its an overseas winner they would just pay the difference in postage.
We would of course have to get a plaque for the engine.

Just an idea but it would mean the more vids or photo shoots people did the more chance they would have to win an engine.

Tony

I think that is a great idea Tony. In fact I'm going to take it a step further.

I don't like asking for members to donate except in exceptional circumstances, so I've decided to donate an engine from my collection to the lucky winner.

I'll start a thread with pics and details shortly.

Sandman, that is really generous of you.

This sounds like a great idea, well done to Steve and the Mods for suggesting and moving it foreward   .

I really enjoyed my 4 Bowmans steaming together, so maybe i will try to get all 8 of my stationary Bowmans going at once- Earplugs could be virtual as well

I think to be fair the videos need to be filmed on the weekend but I will be doing lots of prep work before hand. Trying to decide what engine should see it's first attempt at life on this weekend, I've got a few ideas though.....

I believe that we all should have the exact amount of time for Filming. You can practice all you want but. X=so many hours for filming.

This way No One cheats.

No limit on the filming or photos as the idea is to get everyone to contribute as much as possible during the weekend but I think the videos should be filmed on the weekend but none of this has been worked out yet.
SM and Steve are still just bouncing ideas around.
Remember the event is not about winning a steam engine (although that would be a nice bonus ), but making a fun weekend that all forum members can be a part of no matter where they live and get an excuse to fire up that real rare engine.

Are we going to be able to use webcams? If so I will go buy one. My camera only takes about 4 minutes of medium quality video before it hits the 100mb limit on youtube. Is there any way to bring the video down to a smaller size?

If you upload the vid to your computer and use windows movie maker when you 'publish' the video you can choose to make it any size you want or select for the web and it will compress it for you to make it smaller.
You can certainly use a webcam to make the vids but if you decide to live stream it instead a lot of people will miss out because of the time zones.
