My next instalment is my Scorpion Horizontal Steam engine.

I've only ever seen 3 of these.
I have 2 of them and flywheel the other.
All 3 of them needed full restorations, with my second still waiting on it.

This is how I recived it.

After a lot of work this is how it ended up.

I used Brake caliper paint which is good to 490 C.

Shame meths gets hotter than that........

On the first attempt nothing happened, almost no steam made it to the cylinder, the steam pipe was blocked. So a quick desolder of the steam pipe and using a syringe I blew out the old oil.
Put it back together and it ran like a charm.

Here are a couple of still shots.

Got to love that steam.......

And finally the video.

That's great. It has a nice sound too... a really good chuff. How old would it be?

This is the first complete steam engine Scorpion made.
The made a marine engine without a boiler first (never seen one yet) and a boiler by itself (again never seen one) then they made this Horizontal.
They would of started making these late 1945 or early 1946 and continued to make these until the late 50s or early 60s.
As no dating records exist or even when variations took place all I can say is between 1945 and 1960.

Quite a long production run then. I wonder why more haven't survived?

I don't think they sold that many the Vertical engine seems to be the engine of Choice in Australia then.
This was their real cheap model, like the single cylinder Bowman locos which even though it was the cheapest it is now the rarest.

That is a great restoration, a pity about the paint but will you leave it like that now or repaint it at some stage??

Will leave it for now.
I still have this one to restore and it came black from the factory so that will become my runner.
But it still needs a little work.
