MM, Try using a four pulley set up, eg. big to small and big to small again, Like the set up on a SW1 but in reverse if you know what I mean.

Ys that could work! Ive got a lineshaft on it already.

I think that might work!

I think you need about 3V for a LED, so you might need to double the speed. However they take next to no current, so you should be able to run dozens of them, as opposed to just one filament bulb.

The generator for the headlamp on Titan is tiny, but as I am only lighting one LED from it, it takes next to no power, which is the secret of getting it to work.

I am hoping to upgrade to a superbright LED if the generator can take it!

I will experiment and try to gear it up a bit more

LEDs need about 2 volts, but only around 20mA of current. Bulbs need more current. It'll be interesting to see if gearing up the speed has the desired effect.

James got it pretty well right.

the meccano motor is probably reasonable efficient meaning it doesn't draw much current to run so batteries will last longer so for this reason if you use it as a generator it cant make much electricity.

Easy way to explain volts and current would be using water.

Imaging a six inch water pipe and a garden hose.
You turn on the garden hose and the water sprays out 6 feet from the end but takes 30 seconds to fill up a bucket.
The garden hose has low voltage but high current.
Now the 6 inch wter pipe only squirts water 1 foot from the end of the pipe but fills up a bucket in 5 seconds, it has high voltage but low current.

There is a direct relationship to volatage and current that uses the formula E = I * R (Ohms law)

Voltage = Current * Resistance
which leads to another fomula

W=E * I
Power in watts = Voltage * Current in amps

Now if the lightbulb you use is a 1 watt light bulb and we know your generator produces 1.5 volts and put that in the formula

1w = 1.5V * I

= I = 1w / 1.5V
I = 0.66 Amps

Your generator would need to be able to produce 1.5 volts at 0.66amps and it probably isn't producing that much amps.

Hope your head isnt hurting too much.

You've got your analogy the wrong way round tmuir. The voltage is like the pressure and current is like the volume. Can't fault your maths though

1.5 volts is enough to power a bulb MM. My bulbs I use in my dynamo work at 1.2 volts.
