Do you think you could build one of these on a little Peatol/Taig lathe (with milling attachment)? Or would you need something a bit bigger?

I am no expert, but I do not see any really huge turnings, like anything, it is dependent on your skills.

Thanks for the welcome. Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to make myself known. Yes I recently caught the live steam bug and got myself a Cheddar Iver earlier this year. And now I've just ordered a new Caradoc which should arrive next week.
Bought a Taig lathe a couple of years ago but never taught myself how to use it so it got stuck under the bench gathering dust. But this project has certainly sparked my interest so I might have to buy the book, dust off the lathe and give it a try!
Cheers, Glen |

Cool, you will need to post some photos of your Ivor, I have a Bowman 234, a Mamod SL3 and in a couple of days will have the New Mamod Loco. Graham sure has been an inspiration with this project. _________________ Non Impedite Raditioni Cogitationis |

I would say it would be fine.
I've seen some fantastic stuff made on little hobby lathes before. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Take a look at this site, http://www.craftsmanshipmuseum.com/, to give examples of what can be done on a small platform.

Im sure you could build it with your lathe. to turn the wheels I used a mandrel to hold the blank. if your lathe can hold upto 40mm round metal you will have no problems at all _________________

Thanks for all the advice, I think my little Taig lathe might just be big enough after all. I was thinking of selling it and using the proceeds to buy one of the new Mamod locos. But this fascinating thread has completely changed my mind! I've now decided to keep the lathe and, once I've taught myself how to use it, I might attempt a loco project of some kind.
You're doing a superb job there Graham, keep up the good work.
Cheers, Glen |

While the price is still lower, the new Mamod Loco sure seems the bargain. _________________ Non Impedite Raditioni Cogitationis |

| Yes it is a bargain. Looking forward to hearing all about it when your own one arrives. Did you order it direct from Mamod? Wondering what they charge for shipping out here. Cost me $120 to ship my Iver from England! (well, that's what the dealer charged me.....) |
