Sparky your engine is the SEL 1540, also known as the SEL Standard. The little container with the screw top half way along the steam pipe is a lubricator. Unscrew the top and put a couple of drops of oil in, then screw the top back on finger tight. The oil finds it's way into the cylinder during the run and lubricates it. I've got one of these and it runs very well so there's no reason why yours shouldn't! If it was mine I'd repaint the base and polish all the brass. If the boiler has any of the original laquer left on it I'd polish it off... it nearly always looks a mess! Have you got the original two wick burner? Let us know how you get on! |

Its hard to say what it will be worth when its done... prices are a bit strange on eBay at the moment with Christmas being so close. But together with the lineshaft it's going to be worth a lot more than £20.... that was a great buy! Show us some pictures when its done. |

If it's that bad then repaint it.
I wouldn't mind because it's just an SEL, like I did with mine anyway _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode
