Yes, it looks very good. If it can take the heat then as far as looks go it's a definite improvement on matt black heat resistant paint.

It wont survive prolonged direct flame on it but then niether does the original paint but I'm pretty sure it will survive the radiated heat but I guess I'll find out after I've finished restoring it.

Once the paint has been heated a few times - it will harden and cure. It will never stay as good as they day it was painted though!

I've already cured it. I 'baked' it for 1 hour at 100 degrees C as per the directions.

Now that I've finally finished my Loco and my Bowmans haven't arrived yet I've managed to find time to get back to my SE3.
I stripped the paint off the base used a wire brush on the drill to remove a LOT of rust and then treated the rust.
A final rub back and then 3 coats of engine enamel paint and this is the end result.
There is a lot of pitting visible in the surface as the rust was quiet bad but luckily the worst of it is in the firebox and behind it.
Just have the flywheel and cranks to deal with now and then its finished.
The firebox and base are repainted engine frames are original paint.
Here are the before and after pictures.

Wouldn't do much it hasnt got any cylinders or flywheel on it yet.

I didnt fire it before I started to restore it as everything was seized up.
Here hoping my soldering holds out when I do.

What was soldered on it?

Looks like a very very nice model Tony! You know the SE3 holds a special place in my heart . All eight of them

Almost everything.
The whistle bush, safety valve bush and end cap were all resoldered.
I did put it in water and blew air into it and didn't get any bubbles so it should be ok.

It will be nice when finished, as postage costs so much I knew I would only ever get one Se3 so I wanted and early one with the old fashioned whistle on it.

Good choice Tony! ITs a fine machine as you know!

The soldering should hold up! The only reason they break is because people over tighten them without washers or leave them with water in the boilers to scale up and stick in! Then break them trying to unscrew them! what paint did you use on the firebox?

Is that the bigger burner I see?

Same paint I used on my Lady Anne smokebox.
Its a high temp engine enamel cant remember the name off the top of my head at the moment though.
Needs to be baked for an hour at 93C to harden the paint after drying before its heat resistant.

Spurred on from Wallace's posts of his decal surviving 4 firings I've just fitted the decal to my SE3.

Here is the before picture.

And after the decal is fitted.

Its amasing the difference a new decal can make to a tired looking engine.

As you can see from the soot gathering in the boiler I've fired it once since it was restored and the paint has held up pretty well.
I used VHT engine enamel that is good to 550F / 280 C.

Hopefully the decal will survive aswell as the paint.
