Steve, I'm sure you could walk into a jungle and come out with a tank made out of bamboo sticks

Keep up the great work

Wow!!!!

Steve, I've just caught up with this thread.

I can't believe that that's the same engine as was sat in a box in my room for months! Gil said the engine was basically scrap when he sent it to me, and I agree. We all had that boiler down as scrap although it was a shame to give up on it.

I'm so chuffed that I found you at Lincs at the right time to take it and do it up, couldn't have found a better person anywhere.

Really, really well done mate - you're doing a bloody fantastic job!!

Thanks James! I ran it again last night and its running really smoothly now, after some fiddling with the linkages on the con rod which had quite a bit of play in them. It's much quieter now. I intend to make a burner for it this weekend and so I'll post the details when that's done. Then there's just the whistle to fix and a chimney to make.

Here's the burner I've made. I already had some square cross section brass "tube" recovered from some scrap equipment at work, so I used that by cutting it to length and soldering on square endcaps. When the joint is filed flat it's impossible to see the seam. The breather pipe curls up into the dome on the top of the tank, rather like a steam pipe on a boiler. At first I only fitted one burner tube, but I wasn't getting quite enough heat so I added a second. Why is one tube shorter than the other? Because that's all I had left!     The dome and filler cap is a plumbing fitting... very cheap and just the thing!

I've also fixed the whistle. In the box of bits that James gave me was this.... I assume its the remains of the original whistle:

I made these bits to fit onto the original whistle base.

I'll be putting some sort if handle onto the threaded rod when I find something suitable.... or I might turn a wooden handle.

Here it is in place.

And it works!

Finally, here's the engine running.

I've altered the burner slightly... it now has tubes that are the same length, and one of them has a cover so that the engine can tick over with just one tube lit.

I've also made a chimney for it. The engine is now mechanically complete, so tomorrow I'll be taking it apart for painting and polishing.

It'll still be red, but a bit brighter! The chimney will be black except for the brass bit at the top.
