Couldn't you unsolder the spring shaft to let you lap the cylinder face?
(I know that's easy to say but maybe not so simple in practice! ) |

It might not even be soldered, just siezed in. I just dont want to risk unsoldering th cylinder from the cylinder face as that would be a bugger to put back together.
I will clean the rest of the engine up, have another look at it and think about it for a bit before I try anything too rash. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Great vid, tmuir...both this one and the Scorpion make that marvelous chugging sound!
My Falk verticle runs about as well, has same design as your Renown.
On this type it is very easy to have the plate and block go out of alignment.
Often tweaking the bracket that holds the port face can help align it to the block,
but be careful you don't strain the steam pipe too much. _________________ -Chuck

Wouldn't really suggest unsoldering anything unless it's 100% neccesarry _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

The cylinder face really needs lapping but its the type that has the shaft soldered into the cylinder with just a nut that screws on to retain the spring so you cant really do it.

A tip that might be worth trying is to insert a bit of fine emery or w&d in between the cylinder and port face and turn the engine by hand or an electric motor (or another engine!). You should move the paper around while doing this to prevent it cloging. It's surprising how quickly it works so keep checking so as not to go too far! _________________ Regards

The safety valve on my Renown isn't original.
My Renown has suffered badly over the years and at some point lost its original safety valve.
That is the safety valve of my Mamod SE3.
Could you post some pictures up of your Renown as I trying to get a collection of variations together.
Also if you know anything about the history of the Renowns please let me know. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm
