I won this boiler & scratch built marine engine a few weeks ago and arranged to have it hand delivered around Christmas time. Well with travel planes changing it arrived over the weekend.

The smaller boiler is my existing 501 boiler that I include in the picture to show how much bigger the 504 is. I was expecting something much closer in size so was very pleased to see how big this thing actually is.

I tested the engine on the 501 boiler and it really lets rip. It is a very fast and well built little engine and there is no designated exhaust outlet that can be connected to an exhaust pipe so the exhaust steam blasts out of both ends of the valve mechanism on top of the engine and it looks completely manic at high revs.

I pressure tested the boiler on steam up to 70psi but the sight glass blew out, guess I should have stopped at 60psi. Well that was all part of the excitement and everything else held very well so I will add a new glass to my shopping list as well as new pipe fittings to get this boiler connected to my engine collection.

As well as this engine and boiler turning up I also received in the post a Mamod line shaft and 4 accessories that I purchased about 2 months ago and has been lost in the post I guess. I also have a MM2 that goes with this set that I hope will arrive soon.

All in all a very good and steamy weekend.

Those are quite impressive boilers and a nice engine too. I guess Christmas just came early for you

That 504 is a real work horse of a boiler.

Congrats on acquiring one.!!!!

It's a shame they don't make them any more.

I would put the sight glass down to part of the fun. If everything came ready to run without any work to be done then half of the fun would be gone.

Anyway the test was still a success as the boiler showed no other leaks, faults or other unwanted surprises so when I get all my fittings this boiler will be the show piece in my collection.

I didn't realize it was that much larger.
I have the 501 and just got a guage and siphon tube for it after 2 years. Boiler has never been fired up.
I think I'd like the larger size.

This is the underside of the 504 with 6 no. external inclined water tubes and 1 water tube in the centre that runs parallel to the main boiler drum.

The second picture is also of the 504 and the third picture is of the underside of the 501 with 4 no inclined and 1 no parallel water tube.

Any more information you need just let me know.

The 504 is certainly a powerfull looking unit , i`m thinking it would require a very strong burner .

This is a picture of a DUPLEX meths burner that I have just acquired from Giovanni, another form member who used to be a Stuart dealer. The single tube burner in the picture is a gas burner also for the 504.

The DUPLEX is still in the post but I fired the 504 on the single tube version of this meths burner that came with my 501. I was pressure testing the 504 with the 501 single element burner and in 5 minutes had it up to 50psi and concluded the test at 70psi.

I think the DUPLEX will be more than enough to run the boiler under load.

I’m thinking of getting a largish table around 24” by 48” in a nice finish that will accommodate the marine engine, 10V and S50 and hard mount them all with both the 501 and 504 boiler connected together as a fixed steam plant.

I will have it so each engine can be isolated or run together with one or both boilers. I would like to find some kind of water pump to make a water display/fountain on the same table or other task for the engines to perform.

The whole thing would be a center display in my living room.

Having said that I may look for some kind of boat hull so I can dismount the 501 and marine engine and go outdoors occasionally.

Still in the planning stage and collecting globe valves and pipe connectors etc for this so all in time.
