Hi all,

I am new to live steam having recived my first model, a Wilesco D405, in the post yesterday. While looking for info online, I came across this group and thought I should join (a post about the Black Crows helped as well

)
As it only arrived yesterday, I have yet to steam the model but I am impressed so far. However, I received a set of road tyres this morning from Forest Classics which I fitted and really look good as well as pretecting the road wheels from the concrete outside.
Being a huge Fred Dibnah fan, I have fancied a live steam traction engine for many years but for some reason never got around to it, untill now.
I look forward to taking part in future discussions and if anyone has any advice about steaming a D405 for the first time, I would be very pleased to hear it.
Just so you know, I have several packs of Esbit soild fuel and a can of distilled water to get me started.

Hi Kristian, and welcome to the forum. The mobile guys will be on soon to deal with your query.

You started in the same way I did a few years ago, and I have to say I've had a great deal of fun with the toy steam hobby.

You'll find, like the rest of us, that this hobby is very addictive, and can be somewhat money intensive.

Best to follow the intructions that came with it.
The distilled water will help you keep it working like new.
Be sure to lubricate the steam cylinder with steam cylinder oil and use other oil on all other moving parts. I generally use a synthetic clock oil or sythetic motor oil on all parts not inside the cylinder.

Only thing I can add to the info you have received is keep the oil off the firebox sides of the model.

The fire will darken the paint when you run it...just part of it...but if there is oil on the sides it bakes and gets dark quick.

At least mine seemed too....

So don't be sloppy with the oil around the firebox (between the back wheels )....

And don't skimp and use tap water...as the TE's sight glasses are hard to clean when they get scummed up.... Unless you use a vinegar solution and then rinse it out very well....followed by a steam - up to make sure its vinegar free.

And do not store it with water in it...empty the boiler and leave out the safety valve so it can air dry.Clean dry and oil then store...
