I honestly didn't think it would take off here, but, Downsey, my grandson, is off to a Halloween party.

What's next??? Thanksgiving?? I blame the big retailers, sell, sell, sell.

I still hope he enjoys it

Thanksgiving is entirely different from Halloween, a truly good Holiday. Of course, I live in the middle of nowhere so you saw more Halloween than I did.

Halloween is a big deal around here.

Here is my son's costume this year--sort of steam-related, too!

HAhaha

We adults are dressing up to take the little ones out....Wait till you see my get-up.

I have to glue a bunch of prosthetic stuff to my face....takes a hour or so to do it all.

When I was in High school....I worked at several haunted houses and trails.

Great fun!

Jim

You don't have Hallowe'en in Australia? Wow, I thought that was a constant in English-speaking countries.

I don't like how it has gotten to kids buying plastic costumes in Wal-mart, and teenage girls using the occasion to dress like floozies, I've always enjoyed the more traditional aspect of the event (I say "event" because it's not a holiday in Canada),

The concept of protecting oneself from malevolent forces at the onset of winter is spooky and fun, carving menacing faces in Pumpkins and dressing up as an imp or a goblin, so the dead will pass you by as they trek off to hell at the end of the harvest, it's delicious, even if it is sort of pagan. Sometimes I regret that our culture doesn't believe in that stuff anymore. Of course, in Australia it's springtime, so the idea of having a ceremony to ward off evil winter spirits must seem a little ridiculous.

Perhaps far in the future, we will dress as Bankers and Real Estate speculators, in the ceremonial hopes that these malevolent forces will pass us by and leave us alone as they begin their trek to hell at the end of the fiscal year.

Halloween became established in Sweden about 1997 after several years of intensive effort from commercial interests.
Now it's a big thing, people dressing up and kids demanding candy.
But I know where the little b*ggers live.
Here is a little Halloween friend for Dauntless.

This is the scariest pumpkin I've seen this year, none other than Chuck Norris!

I had a visit from a little witch last night but before she got to me she had been apple bobbing and the makeup had gone.

Halloween is a very American thing, I think.

Thankfully we get none of it around where we are. Once some kids knocked on me Nanna's door while we were there. Me old man answered and said "Do a trick and disappear, or I'll treat you to a kick up the arse". Did the trick

That's what I feel like doing. I'll bet the reason Hallowe'en seems like "an American thing" is because in North America (not just "America"), the retailers ruin every single tiny little event on the calendar by trying to ram all their useless sh**ty plastic products down our throats, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. They've ruined Christmas, Easter, Hallowe'en, Thanksgiving, and my goddam birthday even. First comes the stupid shopping sales, then the trite saccharine cartoons, then the plastic junk in the "Walmart" stores, then McDonald's features plastic cups for kids with a holiday theme, and so on. Pretty soon all the adults are so sick of the whole thing they can't remember what the whole thing was supposed to be about. ("but I don't believe in Jeebus!"*) The only thing you can do is go to the pub and get blotto with your mates and make fun of the whole thing.

I have two theories about why they haven't ruined Ramadan yet:

1) It worries them
2) They have no idea what it is.

Not that I like it, but financially, Halloween is the second most profitable holiday for retail, next to Christmas.
