Dear fellows in steam,
I would like you to share the intense pleasure I have been feeling since the arrival of my latest acquisition (after I was beaten twice by the narrowest possible margin before...which turned out to be my piece of luck, in the end  )
It is a very rare two-cylinder Maerklin. It is not listed in Schiffmann's, but Kaiser/Becker offer a photo and list it as "ohne Katalognachweis" (no catalogue reference) and without a serial number, but date it "1920-1925".
One flywheel, feeder pump, two-cylinder, "Flammrohrkessel" (does anyone care to give me the correct English term?) plus Maerklin generator 
Some details tempt me to believe that it might have been built for "Lipsia-Lehrmittelanstalt Dr Oskar Schneider, Leipzig". If anybody knows more ... 
Here some photos:
When I looked more closely at the funnel base, I noticed a sieve-like thingy stuck in there, removed it and found...
...one of the burner tops!!!
I have so far just given it a first overall clean-up. Pistons and rods moving perfectly, the whistle immediately giving soft sounds when you turn the flywheel... ...and put a replica funnel (belonging to my compound restoration project) on top.
Yes, I am going to remove the nasty silvery paint 
BTW: The base is only 30x30cm. Not a large, but a great engine, I presume...
A pity that the water gauge is missing. But "kommt Zeit kommt Rat" - I will find a solution some day. And it might be working as it is anyway

What a great engine there, they really did know how to make them didnt they
and what a stroke of luck with the vapouriser in the chimney.
Its lucky that the Marklin badge isnt recognisable to some, I find that as soon as an item is listed as "Marklin" the price goes silly.

What a great find. I would love to have an engine with a water pump someday. Enjoy it, keep us posted with your restoration!

...right you are!!! Funny enough, the badge on the generator was clearly visible - that's why I didn't really hope for anything when I placed the bid. Lucky enough, the photos were not really focused, some people might have feared the was something fishy about this engine. BUT IT WASN'T
BTW: The pressure gauge has the Maerklin initials as well... |

Well out of this league, but I just picked up a nice vertical on UK ebay- pics of the vertical were on its side, they did get it as being German though!

Another question here: is there a difference between two-cylinder and twin cylinder? You may know these funny Doll "Doppelzylinder"-engines (two-cylinders but only one valve/valve-gear at the centre) as opposed to "Zweizylinder" (two cylinders plus two indedendent set of valve/valve gears). But I must confess there is no clear distinction in German either... |
