I've so far fitted two wick holders to the burners.
I didn't like my chances of being able to drill a hole through a 1/8 copper pipe so I'm making a slit on the top and bottom with my jewelers saw opening it up with a small triangle file and then pushing the tip into the hole in the 1/8 pipe and twurling it to open up the hole more and it seems to be working. |
That's more or less how I would have done it. Not having a jeweler's saw, I would have done it with just the needle file. I don't think you need to open it up much as long as there is a hole there larger than a pin hole. In fact, if you go too far you might weaken it.
I'm at work at the moment but when I get home I'll take a look inside mine to see what it looks like. _________________ Regards

Ok heres some pictures.
I'm half way through at the moment and stopping for a break as I came very close to ruining wick number three when rounding the base on my watchmakers lathe. It slipped loose in the 3 jaw chuck and badly dented it. I had to spend 5 minutes gently tapping it round again on a 6mm drill bit shaft.
First picture shows the whole burner with 3 wicks fitted and 3 behind it waiting to have the silver soldered bases rounded off and drilled to go on 1/8 pipe.
Close up of the 3 fitted.
To make the base round I clipped it as close as I could with tin snips and then fitted it to my watch makers lathe and used a file then emery paper to make it round. I didn't use the lathe cutting tools as the tool holder needs repairing on my lathe.
Close up of the 3 waiting to have bases rounded.
To drill the hole through the wick holders I push a wooden dowel inside them that was a snug fit, marked the position of the hole and gentle centre punched it.
I then rested the wickholder with dowel inside it on another scrap of wood and drilled a 3.3mm hole through with my drill press.
The dowel stops the holder from denting and helps keep the drilled hole round. To stop the solder flowing in and blocking the holes I made in the 1/8 copper pipe I rubbed a lead pencil over them as solder wont flow past the graphite.
This picture shows the bases rounded.

Great project Tony! Looks really good aswell! those wicks are quite tall but I guess if they were any shorter as you filled the burner it would force meths out of the tubes _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

I'll have to remember that trick with the graphite _________________ Regards

LOL I want to find a way of making the mamod burners last a bit longer....they always run out too quickly _________________ Solid Fuel tablets explode

Thats looking real good, just goes to show just how tricky these burners were to make - time/cost etc . . .
Tony is the copper tube drilled from above?ie so the meths willcome out, or is the tube drilled right thru? |

I used my jewelers saw and put a slit above and another directly below and then used a triangle file to widen the slits and finally pushed the pointy end of the file into the hole in the pipe and spun it to open it up more from both sides so what I end up with is what looks like a 1 to 1.5mm hole drilled through the pipe.
I've got drill bits that small but drilling the 7mm wick tube is hard enough, didn't fancy my chances of successfully drilling a 1.5mm hole through a 3mm pipe. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

It works just like having dirty copper. We all know how hard it is to solder if you don't clean the surface properly. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

Added the 4th wick tube but as its 10:30pm and everyone else is asleep I cant really do any more tonight as electric tools make too much noise.
Will hopefully finish it tomorrow night and is its not too late I may even give it a test run and see if I can fire up the complete Bowman.
I have emailed Chris from Toy Train spares and he has all the bits in stock I need except the bogie wheels but he says he will be getting his next batch of wheels in two weeks time from his caster so will probably ring him up tomorrow and place my order with him.
Then whilst I'm waiting for the parts to turn up I can strip down and paint the two bowmans.
I'm getting new axles made so I can run it on 45mm track and will just need to make some spacers to shift the cylinders further out and I will be all set.
For those interested Chris's web site is
http://www.toytrainspares.co.uk/index.html
He makes repro parts for Bowman, Hornby and Bassett Lowke locos. _________________ http://www.freewebs.com/ozsteam/index.htm

| The burner's looking very good Tony... it'll be great to see it go! Thanks for the toytrainspares link, it looks like a very useful source of bits. |

I've just had a look inside one of my wick holders and I can't see any hole in the feed tube, so I can only assume it's on the bottom of the tube. No clues, therefore, how it was made. _________________ Regards

Same with Mamod burners, the hole is at the bottom. I assume a safety thing _________________
